Old Eire plate

Looking a buying a car, NI reg in North, was originally a UK car, exported to IRL, received a cool low number Irish reg, exported out to NI a few years back on a nice NI plate, then to me hopefully on a new UK or NI plate whatever I decide.

I'm from UK here for a few months, intend to take it home with me (I have UK residency) or if I do stay, after 6 months reg the car back to it's Eire plate and go from there. Just keeping options open.

If I can do that I'd avoid the VRT, but I'm wondering if the VRT is already paid and not reclaimed, evidence being cartell still shows plate as allocated to this car, and I don't know anyone who ever bother or got a VRT refund....

I know the only way to check is to take it in to the NCT place, but I'm wary of attracting unwanted attention, and secretly I'm also hoping the previous owner never claimed back the VRT, and I'm more likely to return to UK with it, I could claim it back. It's a former but old flash car, so VRT a fair amount.

Or, if the Guards get me, I'm hoping I'll be covered by the previous owners' VRT payment..

    A lot to hope for!

I did reclaim VRT refund, and car is still showing up on cartell, as well as it can be booked for NCT or Taxed.
    Still fully in the system.

Eire would have had "connotations", and generally best avoided unless you are a daily mail columnist.

If the vrt wasn't reclaimed on export, the car can just be driven again.

It shouldn't have. 'Éire' is actually the official name of our country, the English translation being 'Ireland'. What to me is much more wrong is being referred to as 'Southern Ireland' or the 'Republic of Ireland'

To the OP, ironically very few Irish people refer to Ireland as Eire. I thought initially you were talking about some historical plates from the 20s
