Importing a Uk car using a primary medical cert

    Hi,

Has anyone who has a primary medical cert imported a new Uk car? Can you tell me what the process is? I know it would be VRT exempt but it is possible to somehow reclaim the UK VAT using the primary medical cert?
I understand no Irish VAT would be paid on the car but essentially it's the same difference I.e instead of revenue sending the VAT cheque to me they would send it to UK government? Or does it not work this way?
I would really appreciate it if someone could inform me. Thanks

The PMC has only a relevance in Ireland you would be trying to reclaim UK VAT from the UK HMRC so the PMC has no relevance to them.
Re reclaimng the UK VAT from UK HMRC this may be possible for a New Car as you are exporting it, but not completely sure on this.......

Hi skippy thanks for your input on this. Since I posted this I've found out that I can buy a Uk car exclusive of tax because I'm exporting it. I rang an exports dealership in the Uk and asked if I can do this even though I'm just a private buyer and she said yes but that I would then have to pay VAT and VRT in Ireland. But because I have a PMC I wouldn't have to pay anything in Ireland. I don't know if the car would have to be modified or not before bringing it into ireland I think it does, not sure about this part though. It's good to have this option as cars are so much cheaper in the UK at the moment because of brexit. It's an convenience but worth it imo.

OP, if you havnt already, you might try the 'buying' forum in the 'motors' section. There are a couple of posters over there that seem to be well versed in what you can do & how you can do it if you have a PMC.

Best of luck with it !

You can modify the car after you bring it into Ireland, but you need to do it straight away. Go to a registered Car adaption place for Disabled drivers. They will give you a certificate etc to confirm and certify the adaption and it will be done properly. Do not just get it done at any mechanic. You need the receipts etc Any adaption not available by the normal dealer such as knob on steering wheel etc. If its a new car you can literally buy it over the phone as you will have all the usual warranties etc. and then just go and pick it up once ready.
