    Hi all,

Would love some advice or opinions about engagement rings! I have decided to go for a yellow gold engagement ring with the diamond set in either white gold or platinum setting.

I've heard different opinions of getting a white gold vs platinum setting- the white gold option is much more common and available but a friend said she heard its better to go with platinum setting as its stronger??

    Any opinions??

Platinum is a more durable metal but I wouldn't say a white gold setting would be in any way weak. With Platinum you also won't need to get it dipped/plated every few years as you do with white gold (to keep it from going yellow ish).

When I was picking out my engagement ring I was told by the jeweler to go with the same metal side by side as they can wear differently? If that is the case I'd go with white gold with the yellow gold :)

I have white gold wedding and engagement rings.
I'm not sure I'd totally recommend it, I have to get them redipped every couple of years and this is a cost we didn't think of at the time.
If I had my time over I'd probably get the rings I have now, in either yellow gold or platinum. The older I get the more I'm getting to like yellow gold. A friend of mind has a yellow gold engagement ring and it's really striking.
I'm considering looking into getting mine reset in the future as I love the settings and stones but the white gold, while something I loved at the time, doesn't seem to be wearing as well as I had thought.

Lazygal, how much is the redipping? I need mine done but money is super tight.

I got my engagement ring dipped just before my wedding and it cost €35. Have heard of places doing it cheaper. I got mine done in a well known jewellers.

I have three that need doing, I think I paid 40 or 50 for each one, so it adds up over the years. I go back to where we bought them for my own reasons, but I might shop around a bit.

The only thing is platinum tends to go very dull over the years, almost grey, white gold is brighter.. himself didn't realise that white gold is yellow gold plated, said he's never buying it again haha.. I don't wear yellow gold though, I am liking it more as I get older but I've always worn silver/ white gold. So even with the dipping I'd still probably go for the white gold! My jeweller is going to dip my engagement ring before the wedding for free. (Both rings bought in the same place!)

The only thing is, its areas that wear more that tend to go yellowish, as in the back of my rings go off colour and the front doesn't at all.. so I would doubt you would need to get the setting dipped all that much? My ring is 2 years old and the back is fading but the front settings are still perfect!
