Safe to drive?

I have a one year old jeep that was recently crunching going into 4th gear. It was covered under warranty so was fixed by garage. They said they had to rebuild the gear box.
Anyway few days ago it would not go into 6th gear and today while driving I could not get it into 3rd gear. I had to stop engine and restart. This happened few more times till I got home.
I have to take back to the garage but its a 30 minute drive. Do you think it is safe to drive there???

Did you ask the garage will they collect it?

They said I would have to go through insurance company and get towed to nearest garage. Think insurance company will only take to their nearest garage not the one that I want.
There was no mechanic in garage to speak with as I could probably drive to garage. I just don't want to cause any more harm to gearbox.

Get them to instruct you in writing (an email or text will do) to drive it to their place.
You will need to go there anyway to pick up your courtesy car.
What make and model is it?

161 Hyundai Tucson.
I imported from the UK so I am dealing with Hyundai (Ireland). They would not put that it writing.

One way or another I would get it towed. It would probably be OK but something is going wrong in the gear box and it seizing while you are driving is a possibility.

Doesn't Hyundai give free AA cover? Seems very unusual.

Was just going to say, Hyundai offer roadside assist with their warranty.

Sorry, I wrongly assumed that it was an Irish supplied car.
I suppose it is safer to get it recovered to the garage then.
You don't want it packing up on the way.
At least they are honoring the warranty.

Jeep/car/crossover whatever!!
I rarely use forums for this reason always people on it to contradict what you are saying!!!
I was just looking for a little advice about safety to drive vehicle as could not get mechanic last night.

Get the insurance companies breakdown service, they'll only pay for it to go to the nearest garage, but just ask the driver to take it to the garage you want, might need to give him a few quid for this trouble.

The garage I need to go to is 35 minute drive away doubt they would go this far.

You've two choices as it stands OP. Pay for a tow or drive it.

If it's dropping gears, driving it would be foolish really from your own safety point of view and Hyundai will look for any excuse not to cover a claim. If the garage is 30 mins away and the car is (likely) 2wd, you'll get a small firm to tow it for less than €100.

just to let you all know I decided to drive to garage. I got there in one peace, had gears seize once on way down. But got there.!!!! Phew

After my experience I don't recommend buying vehicles from the UK. It is covered under warranty however everything is taking so long to sort out. As approval has to be sought from the UK. It will take a week now for this to be sorted. So no vehicle for a week!!!! Also having issues with the AA as they say you lose the cover on a Hyundai when you change country!!!

I just had my jeep towed by insurance to my mechanic no issues.

Plenty of garages even down the road from where broke down and he took no issues.

I've heard of a few Hyundai gearbox issues, even with the Santa Fe. is it a common issue with Hyundai? I like the Santa Fe but they are very expensive for what they are.

They seem to be causing issues at least it happened early but what are they going to be like as they get older.

It's not always that bad but it is with Hyundai. The dealer has to get prior approval from Hyundai to work on the car and the parts availability is shocking. If the fault is within the box, synchros etc as opposed to a linkage issue I'd be surprised if you are on the road in less than a fortnight.

Did you buy the car in the UK yourself or from an Irish dealer?

Yes its looking like nearly 2 weeks in the garage to fix. It is now the 5th/6th gear that has to be replaced. They already replaced the 3rd/4th gear part four weeks ago. They said its very unusual for two parts to go in the space of a month.

That there is your problem. You bypassed Hyundai Ireland by buying in the UK and saving yourself a couple of quid, possibly their cut of the deal, and now you want them to dance to your tune. They have to honour the european warranty but they wont be going out of their way to help.

Its more to with the brand of "jeep" you bought. Hopefully you get sorted but try to avoid Korean scrap in future.
Much better and more reliable manufacturers out there.
