Roof or tow-bar box

None of the current EVs that I would consider have a large enough boot, and I may be waiting a while! Adding roof or tow-bar box would give me the volume needed.

Which would have less impact on range?

I imagine the tow-bar box would be better with regard to range with it sitting behind the car body, but having driven the Ioniq EV which seemed nose light to me, I imagine adding weight to rear end having quite a negative effect on handling. I didn't get same impression with the Leaf.

Tow-bar box options are Bak-Rak and Thule, roof boxes, most of us are probably familiar with them.

Either would be brutal on range, particularly in Ioniq. Don't be surprised if your range of 180km @120km/h turns into 120km @120km/h

And you're not allowed to tow with either Leaf or Ioniq. Not sure, but even fitting a tow bar might give you issues. Check with Hyundai and check with your insurer first and get their answers confirmed by (e)mail

Yes aware of the lack of towing. Plenty of carriers utilise tow-bar, most often for bikes.

The range decrease you are suggesting may happen is more than I had considered. The 40 kWh eNV200 is now another option for me.

@120km/h, I doubt even the 40kWh eNV200 would do a lot better than a 28kWh Ioniq with roof box :)

Obviously the range limitation for Ioniq is a lot less severe if you slow down a little on motorways and almost non-existent in city / regional road driving. And perhaps you only need to do a longer trip (with roof box) once in a while, so an extra stop would be tolerable?
