I'm going to buy a gameboy for my OH for Christmas and have my eye on an Original DMG 01 with backlight. I just want to check which games are compatible with this? As in, the games for gameboy without the backlight? I have no clue about any of this! So I want to get him some games but need to make sure they will work with it!

All games labeled "Gameboy" will work on a Gameboy handheld, if it's "Gameboy Advance" or "Gameboy Color" then they aren't going to work at all.

You might pick up a Gameboy Everdrive, https://krikzz.com/store/home/47-everdrive-gb.html and this can be "loaded" with any games he likes at all.
I'd still recommend buying original games for the console but, at the outset at least, it's a handy way to have a library of titles, plus you can test games before spending money on the original carts.

What does the ever drive do is that basically a hard drive on a cart that you can load with roms ?

It's a cart that allows a person to run games from an SD card. Each game, when selected, is flashed onto the carts memory and hence loaded into the Gameboy, Megadrive or whatever version Everdrive you own.

better off getting a GBA. can play GB and GB color games.
screen is easy to see compared to the original GB.
if your willing to spend a bit the GBA 101 is the one to get

I love all of my Gameboy handhelds.
My heart is with the Gameboy Pocket though, a wonder of a device, a crisp mono screen running for ages on two AAA batteries.
    Here's my classic Gameboy collection
Not sure if pic will work

I was taking pictures for this upcoming GamesXpo in Dublin at the end of the month, apparently I am providing consoles for both use and display, so I was asked to send some photos of my stuff.
Sadly, it is not some Ikea made perfection, my gear is stuffed into my attic room and it all looks quite disordered, a bit like my mind.
I have great plans, but I'd rather spend €150 on games and consoles than nice storage options.
Might have to adjust that way of thinking!
