Has bargain alerts been trumped by Facebook?

Feel free to delete if you want mods, but bargain alerts is like a community inside a community so felt it warranted discussion.

There's quite a few pages up on Facebook I follow which post a huge amount of bargains daily, for instance today:

50% off sale in Michael Kors in Kildare village.
70% off makeup in Llyods Pharmacy Ballyfermot

The page they're from has about 150k followers.

The bargains here have slowly got worse and worse or come to an almost stop.. do we really need another bargain alert on a socket set?

My point in writing this is maybe someone will take the time to post the worthwhile actual bargains here from these pages and put a bit of life into it again, or has
the message board been trumped by Facebook?

I won't post the page name unless asked too.

    In before where's the bargain.

Personally, I can't stand Facebook and don't use it.

    I don't use Facebook either.

Bargain alerts is great, except for the vultures.

Allot of people mightn't have known about the latest Xbox deal if it wasn't for bargain alerts

Honestly haven't got the time, but if you checked out the page you would get what I mean the difference between here and there bargain wise is huge, may be the bargain alerts of yesteryear with a bigger audience

I also can't stand face book but I do have an account just for myself for my own personal use. I don't use it in the Conventional way. It's full of nosey so and sos and arrogant nobody's.
Whats the name that bargain site.

Never understand posts like yours, expending everyone else to do the work and then have the gall to complain when you're not satisfied you are getting enough bargains.
I'd tell you to **** off but that would be rude.

What's the page? Beady eyes bargains or something like that?

It's just sheer lack of user traffic is the problem, people don't like the direction the site has gone in and have left in big numbers, feedback was given in the now deceased feedback forum and it was ignored. The guys in the boards office are starting threads in AH now trying to stem the flow.

Just judging by the "I don't use fb" posts guess what I thought was right.

"Rip-offs and Good deals" is the page name for those who want to look it up.

No disrespect to the current team, but Basq's period of modship a couple of years back seemed to coincide with better bargains, which appeared on a more frequent basis & caused much mirth, BA hysteria and the odd protracted bickerfest (usually involving that fella who posted receipts of everything he purchased).

There was more of a community feel about the place, though that's a complaint you'll see replicated across myriad fora on the site. I am slightly wary too of the amount of Chinese goods showing up in BA & hope this is not a repeat of the shilling that went on previously.

or indeed the Nikon D5300 going for 303 euros' (down from 719 ) :)

No one ever said there wasn't any bargains, you seem to have both missed the point. It was the quantity/quality that is lacking. The Wetek group buy was another good one, but they are few and far between.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

Lot a less Bargains here. For sure.

But a lot of those so called bargains on other sites are very limited. Very narrow range of products available, they are more of a promotion than anything else.

Did i say I wasn't getting enough bargains.. my point was no one's posting them when they're out there. Snotty is one word silly **** is another.. two. Ha.

It's sad to see a good community slowly dying out. A lot of knowledgeable people here, your post however absolutely pointless. Complaining cause you think someone else is complaining. Wow.

Just share these Facebook bargains here for those of us that don't subscribe to the page? You don't need to advertise this "competing" entity, just share the links themselves.

Frankly bargain alerts here has saved me the guts of a grand at this stage, I'd say. Mainly on Dominos codes sadly.

To be fair that's more down to the fact boards dropped it's knickers when bangood and gearbest waved a few euros at them to get forums despite all the insults the office had about them

I check here and those sites just in case as a lot smaller bargains won't get posted here but I have to say I am less likely to post smaller bargains here because you get ungrateful idiots saying things like this is not a bargain when it's not of use to them . It's become post a big one or it's not appreciated here lately ( just my opinion )Too many people are moaning about people's posts here lately it's getting annoying

I don't see Facebook as a threat to Bargain Alerts. More a compliment to it. I'd be interested to learn what Facebook groups etc promote genuine Irish discounts. Boards.ie is a community site so as long as there is people popping in to this forum, there will be a demand to know where the best bargains are to be had.

If you find these first on Facebook, so be it.

Beady Eyed Bargains and special offers is the one I'm in and its Irish. TBH I find it like the complete opposite to here. Literally everything is posted there which can make it very hard to navigate but here only the really big deals tend to be posted which makes it quiet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,204 ✭✭✭moonboy52

I love Bargain Alerts. Some great deals have been posted over the years, and I check here every few hours.

As I mostly buy electronic deals and they almost always originate from the UK, I love HUKD.

A lot of deals are copied here from there.

Has bargain alerts been trumped by facebook/hukd/pricescanner/checkargos?

Nope, but we'll repost it here.

Edit: I've got the 303e Nikon and a 40e Xbox thanks to here in the last few months so the auld BA forum still has life in it.

Saved me tonnes of money over the years

I still remember one of them for many many years ago - that 32" LCD deal at Tesco. This was when LCD TVs were 3-4k usually, and a boardsie posted it here, 400 I think it was, smashing deal. :)

Those Facebook pages - even though they'll have the odd gem - are usually crammed with too much shíte for me to follow. For every TV retailing at less than half price, you'll have about 20 posts about how a box of grapes normally costing €3 are now reduced to to €2.75 in a single Tesco shop in Mallow.

God yeah, one of the beady eyes admins posts practically nothing but referral links. Afflink this, afflink that.... means a lotta ****e in there not to mention people just tagging each other in the comments. It's hard work to actually catch a bargain there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,881 ✭✭✭jeffk

I use one or two and yes they can be good, but as JaMarcusHustle said they can be very local.

There was a walking aid on special in Lloyd Pharmacy, Ashleaf(never heard of the place before) and again I seen and place opened so I could call it/they was gone.

Compared to this forum, the last few weeks ive gotten a spider-man dvd/on my box,3M USB cables, waiting on a USB car charger/radio thing and a keyboard remote for an android box. Plus missed out on an android box through my own fault

    Whats the page?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    I find this forum great.
Its cost me a fortune over the years in sh1te I never knew I needed

I find FB very hard to navigate. Too much going on and I would miss 90% of the bargains posted.
it's too noisy as all these people tagging others and themselves creates too many notifications and I tend to just start ignoring it
Where as BA forum here is just a case of pop in when you want and see what's the latest flash deal!

BA would be horrific if all those ‘bargains’ where to be posted here!

It would be terrific if someone would sift through them and post the good ones here (preferably someone with similar tastes to me). O just had a look and saw some baby wipes listed that are probably still more expensive than Aldi or Lidl branded ones.

Thanks to everyone who posts bargains here.

I love BA, sure there is the 'how is that a bargain" brigade but there are knobs on every forum, by and large its great, I have acquired a lot of bargains on here, cost me a small fortune!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,167 ✭✭✭messinkiapina

Must admit I was buying about 2 items a week via bargain alerts links a couple of years back. Now it's just once in a while.
I still check the page every few hours but I don't find a fraction of the interesting deals that I used to. I never considered if that's because the community has shrunk or if the deals have just been drying up. Either way I still keep visiting as much as I ever did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,197 ✭✭✭✭Basq

I don't visit nearly as often as I once did too.

I think, along with the ludicrous decision to have Banggood and Gearbest as Sponsored forums, it's the reliance on these aforementioned sites.

A cheap desktop drone for under a tenner, while interesting, is just getting tired now!

Deals have dried up and get fixed quicker, possibly because of higher internet penetration. How did people manage to be aware of bargains before boards?
In general, everything is moving from forums like this to social media

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,682 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Its the constant penneys deals which are not deals because Penneys is cheap anyways. BA keeps things in threads that are easier to ignore if its of no interest.

Its the community critique of the bargain that I like.
Like the smart ultra 6 phone or the hisense 49 inch TV or the recent 27" all in one PC.
You know you're actually getting a bargain, because of the knowledgeable contributors to the thread

This is the key for me. The coal thread is a classic example. There is so much more additional information.

This is what makes the Chinese bargains so good, in that people will be able to advise on whether they work here etc.

The facebook layout means that you have to scroll thought endless items that are either too far away or of no interest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭Etnies

Stuff like attached pic although small and of no use to me personally would be a decent bargain for somebody im sure

I still prefer Bargain Alerts as you can scan the forum pages very quickly and dont have to constantly scroll down like Facebook. But I do agree that the bargains seem to be drying up. I havent posted one myself in a while simply because I am not coming across them.

    "Trumped by Facebook?"
You mean scan through all the baby/kitteh photos and people boasting about where they ate last night, or are spending their weekends for the occasional notification about a discount on brands that you follow (and only the ones you follow, otherwise missing other potential bargains from brands you've never heard of)? That Facebook?

    eh... no

Trumped by HUKD? Yes ... Facebook no

leaving FB was the best thing I ever did btw :)
