    Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is a thread that breaks down cost of geothermal/heat pump with under floor versus oil boiler with rads for average size house or for build they have done themselves.

I done search cant seem find thread or a link to site that may have done comparison.

it would be interesting see numbers comparing to such as cost etc.

I'm hoping to self build next year and im trying make decision on heating system.

    Thanks in advance,

There is a builder in Waterford doing A2 rated housing estates. I believe they are currently measuring consumption of two identical houses - one with gas and PV, the other with a heat pump. It will be interesting to see the results when they come out, but that will be in a while.

A well built house uses so little energy that I suspect the cost of a heat pump is hard to justify.

I would have had the same opinion but I'm currently pricing for a new build and when you include the renewable element the cost difference isn't as big as I expected.

Two years ago, I was having an extension built, and needed a new boiler too. I was recommended a contact in a well known supplier, so I spoke to him, and after answering some questions on the building size, expected insulation type etc (they had some software to do this) provided a printout showing costings of heatpump vs gas boiler. The electricity and gas pricing they used were two years out of date, I think they included annual servicing costs, but excluded depreciation (The heat pump was expected to need replacement after 10 years). So I did my own calculations on their template, and came up with very different figures. They were not interested in explaining their figures further, and said that I was wrong to focus on the cost and should "think about how toasty I would be". So that was **** service.

But my point is that if you contact suppliers, they may be able to give you a breakdown, which you can use to do your own double-checking.

We are in the same position everyone is recommending airtowater heat pumps but the installation costs seem very high, it's hard to know what to do. Currently have two similar prices but two different heat pumps and it's hard to directly compare.

Is easy...gas beats the a2w which beats the oil.
All of the above subject to local surce / supply / connetion.

Currently renovating and building and deciding between Gas (existing connection) and A2W. Hadn’t seen it described that way, is there any info that helps demonstrate that view as the consensus online in the other forums I’ve viewed in the UK at least seems to lean towards A2W?

As I mentioned earlier, there is a developer building identical houses, one gas, one heat pump to get that comparison, but it will be a full calendar year before results are known.

Your BER assessor will know how many KwHrs are required for your house each year. You could price that based on gas, oil or A2W based on a COP. It would be the most accurate calculation you can get for now.
