weird smell in 1 bedroom apartment

I'm renting a small 1 bed apartment with 2 rooms a loving room and a bedroom , for the past few days ive been getting a weird smell in the livingroom/kitchen area . I cant really explan what it smells like other than its not biological like rotten meat or a sewer type smell but more chemical like coal tar soap or perhaps sulphur, im off to work now for the day so ill leave the window open , any ideas
