IKEA SELF ASSEMBLY - FEELING SUICIDAL!

This is as far as I got with an ikea assembly of the Goliat computer desk. And I feel like ****. What a load of absolute bollox this thing is to assembly.

All I could get as far to doing was the drawer and that ended up being done wrong because the screws don't match the holes in the instructions. I ended up having to bang out the sides of the drawer, breaking it in the process, because their picture in the instructions can't possibly match reality.

Please, for **** SAKE, put letters on the wood and in the booklet, so wood panel A goes here and B goes underneath etc..

Also, FORCE a member of staff to actually assemble one of these.

The only way I can salvage this piece of **** is to drill a few holes myself, go to the local local hardware store, get some L plates and just screw them all together to try and patch it together.

All I wanted was a nice desk for my computer and monitor and a shelf for the keyboard and I ended up with this nightmare.

Never again. Sorry for the language.

As Thomas Edison used to say you've discovered one more way how not to do it.

    Keep up the progress.

As a long time DIYer, I find IKEA insructions one of the best.
Take the time to read them, lay everything out and go from there.

I've assembled a lot of Ikea product.
I never had any problems with therir instructions or their kits for that matter, one time I was missing a couple of screws but their customer service is pretty good about getting parts out to you.
Its all about getting organised and making sure that each part is correct for the fitment.

Unpack the box and look at the parts as you take them out.

Do a dry run, before you start adding glue and screws, look for the way that parts fit, holes lining up etc.

Take your time, don't rush and put yourself under pressure.

If you can, ask a friend to help with the assembly sometimes another set of eyes can help if you aren't confident.

Have to say, IKEA furniture is so simple to build. I have no trade either. I don't know what else to say apart from I'm in shock at the OP's photo!

The diagram had a slit in the wood, facingone way, but when I assembled the drawer, the screw holes facing inwards were facing outward. :(

Looks like the holes are on the outside for the camlocks ?
number 30+31 in the assembly manual?

I've assembled a couple of things including a big wooden double bed. As previously mentioned. Lay everything out and prepare. Don't just dive in. And follow the instructions to the letter and in order. Don't jump ahead, just because that piece looks like it goes there it may not. Always double check instructions and should be no issues.

Looks like you chipped a corner off. Dont force things as more than likely its the wrong piece/way round.
Double check what goes in the holes. Is it a wooden dowel or metal screw piece. Don't assume anything. Always check the instructions

If you follow the instructions, IKEA products are dead easy to assemble, but I have found that if you look at piece and think to yourself "sure I can see how that goes together" you can get yourself in a bit of bothers, as the order of the steps can sometimes be a little counter-intuitive

*edit* after having another look at your picture, I can see that you have the plastic pins that you knock in to secure the back of the drawer going in the wrong way on the side, so perhaps you also had other fittings mis-aligned
