3 metre HDMI cables for €2.97 in Woodies. I got one and it seems like good quality.

    http://www.woodies.ie/catalogsearch/result/?q=HDMI

    Shipping & Handling (Delivery - Delivery) €5.00

    Free for in store collection

Anyone know of the best place to get one's delivered that are good quality and still long?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,873 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

€8 delivered for a 3m hdmi cable is still a good price.

Checked 5 stores in dublin. Very slim pickings.

That being said, it did allow me to order 3 in carrickmines so we will see.

Is it gold plated, i read alot of the quality of the 80 euro cables in Currys.

I don't think so. You can far buy better quality on eBay delivered for a tenner, and similar to this cable for a fiver.

Just an FYI for people doing a stock search. I tried 5 stores this morning and they were all showing 1 available bar Blanchardstown (typical) which was zero stock. Put in for 3 in one of the stores just for the craic and the order processed. Just received the email saying that they are ready for collection.

I'm not a regular here so I'm not sure if that's humour or not but in a HDMI cable which is only a few metres long, the difference is negligible between a cheapo cable and one which is gold plated.

An €80 HDMI cable is a massive waste of money.

Gold plated or not, anyone who pays a premium for any HDMI cable needs their heads examined. HDMI is a pure digital signal, just 1's and 0's. If they work they work and you wont have any picture quality loss. Cable quality might affect those who use 4K signals as there might be a signal loss and result in an intermittent picture, but 99% of the population are not there yet

Ordered 2 to collect in Lucan, just got the e-mail saying they are ready.
Lucan had only one available when i ordered earlier??

Dont get bogged down in hdmi cable prices,a 10 euro one will work just the same as an 80 euro one.they are both relaying a digital signal and they either work or they dont, theres no grey area in between and one is definitly not better than the other.the only difference possibly in a more expensive one is the build quality, the actual working difference will be zero

Slightly off-topic, but has anyone ever used a HDMI coupler, to join cables.
I've seen a cheap one and it means i could join 2 of these cables resulting in a6 meter cable for under a tenner.;)
    Yay or Nay

1.50 in any Dealz. About sixty cent on sites like Ali express

Do you really need your appliance three metres from your telly?

Yep, I use one all the time. With cheap cables you might start to see signal dropping over a very long run or with too many joins but just joining two 3ms together will be fine

Yeah some people do. For example, TV mounted on the wall, but all appliances in a unit in the corner!

Jaysus...how many times have I seen people extolling the virtues of gold plated this or platinum plated that....it ranks right up there with "special digital antenna" (as if the antenna knew whether the signal was digital or analog)...

What a complete and utter waste of money. This is a digital signal you want to transmit. The cable will either conduct the electrical signal or it wont. Best bet is probably to buy the cheapest cable you can. If it works, fine. If it doesn't, then buy another and chances are that'll work.

I challenge anybody to tell me the difference between the picture transmitted over a cheapo (but working) hdmi cable, and a gold plated one....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

The gold plated comments was a joke that happens a lot of boards where people say there is a difference the sales person said there is etc. So I may have went against rules here and give myself a warning sorry for bringing this off topic.

However got a few bites lol

great stuff, i'm thinking of having sat box and android player in the bedside locker and tv mounted on wall at the end of the bed. 6 mts should do it. I have a run from each location into the attic.
    No cables, boxes on display

I remember being in DID in Drogheda. I baulked at their 30 euro hdmi cable and said I'd pick one up for a fiver elsewhere. She told me that if I wanted to risk damaging my TV then I should do just that!

It was scandalous misinformation. I had her backtracking within 20 seconds but it was clearly something they had told customers before.

Collected 3 of these today in limerick. Have to say they look like a premium product. Well packaged. Braided. Very happy with them. Thanks OP. Great bargain.

Picked up 2 earlier this evening - thanks OP!

Picked up mine today also. Their build quality is very good (even the packaging isn't flimsy), time will tell but @ under €3 each it's a no brainer.

The woodies one is actually gold plated! at least some of it
Gold plated terminals and copper conductors allow for crystal clear viewing

Some seem to think the only reason it is gold plated is to attract the likes of some cnut like kanye west, as though it is only some "bling" thing. Gold is a soft metal so deforms and makes good contact. It is also corrosion resistant and a good conductor of electricity. As this price proves it is also not necessarily stupidly expensive. Some will use thin layers of plating. But it is not that expensive in the amounts required, and makes technical sense to use it. If you have diamond encrusted HDMI cables then you have earned the right to feel like a prize tit.

I have "fixed" manys a PC, laptop and indeed TV with HDMI cables by simply unplugging and plugging in the cable or component several times, which is scraping off corrosion which can be causing an intermittent signal.

This is how a poor HDMI connection can appear, it is not usually a degraded looking signal, it is on/off all or nothing flickering. The socket in the TV can get a bit worn/loose, I have improved some connections my just squeezing the HDMI cable connection so it is a tighter fit onto the socket.

My only gripe was actually the packaging. Very hard to open.

It is as well to get cheap cables now because if people get new TV's etc they might need HDMI 2.0 or 2.1. These are the common 1.4. I'm not well up on the technology, but there are tables on the Wikipedia link showing what each type supports.

    Its pure upselling.
When you're dropping 1k on a reply, an extra 50 for a cable is nothing

Sane with garages selling you a shampoo kit for 150 euro when you're buying a new car.

Deals used to do them (possibly still do) for €1.50 a pop... I have 3 at home for the last 2 years and they haven't let me down yet... They are short though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,873 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

There are short ones (0.75m.) in Woodies for 97 cents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

    Dealz have them for €1.50

Used to buy ten of these at a time, and would usually have five of them in my car at any given time, as loads of people wouldn't have HDMI cables for their consoles (which would annoy me greatly).

Although their TV may support HDMI 2, their input will most likely be only HDMI 1.4

These are 3 mtr cables. Not .75. Not 1.
As posted above, they are generally required for wall mounted setups when the feed equipment is on ground level, or just above. In these cases, the shorter dealz stuff wont cut it.

There is no such thing as a HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 cable. You have standard speed and high speed HDMI cable. That's what they are marketed at. For 4K you need to use high speed cable.

There is apparently a new cable for the 2.1 spec.

Terms like high speed, high defintion and fast are more confusing than useful. When there are improvements the marketeers have to call the new thing Super or Ultra or Hyper. I notice that there is a new one for HDMI now called Premium High Speed.

But like you say the current HDMI cables will do for the time being.
