Is it safe to use Redex Diesel treatment?
And how often one should use it?

Saw it in Halfords today for a tenner (500 ml) and wondering if it's worth it.

BG244 would be much better, it's a trade product but can be bought in some places.

Why did you want to use the redex to begin with, is there a problem with the car?

Tesco sell Redex that for cheaper, don't know if they stock the 100% extra free bottles, haven't seen them.

also BG244 .. super high strength, costs more, but apparently more effective at cleaning out your engine., amazon is you're best bet, or www.powerenhancer.co.uk
ive used powerenhancer a few times, and find their service quite good.

But to answer you're question, Redex has a few basic ingredients that might do some good, but its watered down with kerosene to bulk up the product. Occasional use would not be a problem, but i wouldn't be adding it at every fill.

If you want a cleaner.. use BG244 , if you want a fuel enhancer get some 2-ehn , ie Archoil AR6850

I just saw redex in Halfords and read about that.

My car is 2.5 years old and never used any such product before.

There is no difficulty with the car. I just thought it would be a good idea to clean up the engine.
Do I even need to use these? It's for Benz C-Class

Would this redEx stuff do the same as dipetane?
    Or are they worlds apart?

Dipetane was never patented, so it's ingredients aren't known.
Redex, BG244 and other diesel additives use 2-ehn, (it has a distinct smell.) As well as other additives.

You only need a small amount of 2-ehn (1 to 2ml per litre of fuel), so the likes of redex and Miller's, bulk up the product with kerosene.
Otherwise they would be selling a tiny 50ml bottle for €5 to €10

If someone wants to use additives, BG244 is good once a year, and then use Dipetane 200:1 (5L drum) and 2-ehn 500 or 1000:1 (1L bottle)

That's if you want to use additives.

Refineries add 2-ehn which is a cetane improve to bring diesel up to the minimum 51 cetane.
The topaz milesPlus has extra 2-ehn added to increase the cetane of diesel my at least an extra 3 points/numbers.

Any thoughts on my question? Mikeecho

Pick up a bottle of redex in tesco.. it's not going to do any harm, dunno if it will do anything though.

I use 2-ehn and Dipetane on every fill.
Engine is quieter, never had any smoke, no dpf issues, and flys thru nct.

It won't harm the engine and is really just a cleaner.
You can use it occasionally as a preventative or when there is an issue.
Don't expect miracles, or even a notable difference.

    Thanks for that.
Started using dipetane awhile ago . Bought a litre bottle few weeks ago and it seems my mpg has gone up from about 48mpg to at least 51-55mpg since I've used ( or maybe my right foot got lighter :p)
When I ran out and filled up normally without it,I could of swore the engine sounded rougher, and my partner said it to me aswell.
So have picked up a 5 litre bottle the other day :D.
So the higher the ehn rating the better quality diesel?
That redex stuff is a fair bit dearer then dipetane.
Redex is what €13 for half a litre.
Got my dipetane to work out at €6 a litre.

Dipetane isn't a cetane improve, that's what 2-ehn is used for.

2-ehn makes the fuel detonate sooner, allowing for a more complete burn.
There are studies that show a higher cetane number, (No higher than 60) increases engine performance.

I'll try and find it tomorrow.

Where do you get that 2ehn and how much?
Do you notice any benefits from using them?

Mercedes used to state in the handbook not to add additives to fuel with their older cars, make sure this isn't the case with your car

Thanks for the heads up. I am going to look into it today before I buy Redex.

Bg244 is expensive than redex and looks like shipping will cost minimum 15e.

I would recommend Comma Diesel Magic instead of Redex.

This was recommended to me before I would usually throw a bottle in for a full tank maybe twice a year.

It gets great Reviews online and personally I can always feel a difference, the car runs smoother and more quiet.

    http://www.halfords.ie/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/comma-diesel-magic-400ml

    Contains cetane improver too

Any harm adding diptane redex so on... to A4 2014 tdi?
Just to help keep the carbon build up down. Would it do harm to a DPF?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,915 ✭✭✭masterboy123

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I saw good and many reviews for Redex so might try it first.
Comma diesel magic has good reviews but less number of reviews. I have a question, do you put this 400 ml bottle at once?

I got some redex for free so tried it in my old 5 Series.

Didn't do any harm, but didn't notice any improvement either, to fuel consumption or smoothness or performance.

Going to use Redex for the first time tomorrow on my C class. Let's see how it works.

Unless theres a problem with smoke etc, I wouldn't go near those additives again.
Had a diesel jeep a couple of years ago that was a bit smoky on start up so I tried additives and even filled the fuel filter with kerosene (as per the website forums) and then did an Italian tune up.
Ended up dislodging carbon deposits and blocking one or more injectors. Car ran like a dog intermittently after that. Same reason i stay away from engine oil flushes. I'm sure they work well for lots of people but I'll never risk it again.

Is white smoke considered bad as black smoke?
