Well, people of Boards, got some news for you.

I've casual interest in stock prices, currency exchange and all that bollogney.

Just a heads up, you're about to see a 3-5 cent increase in fuel prices this week.

I advise you get your fuel today and you brim the tank :)

Euro/USD rate is worse while Brent is up to over $59, a value not seen in about two years.

    €1.359 / €1.219 average today (26th of September)
We shall see what the average is by the end of the week.

My tank is half full so if I fill tomorrow I'll save around 90c. Happy days😊

I don't know about you JBJ, but if you do an average of 16,000 miles per year in a 45 mpg diesel then you'd save approximately €50 in the course of a year if you listened to advice like that on a weekly basis. I find €50 in my pocket far nicer :) (and that's only with the 3c increase!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭mikeecho

And expect another increase in two weeks.

    Budget is on October 10th

Petrol might escape an increase, but our dirty polar bear killing diesels will most likely see an increase in fuel tax.

So between the two, we could see an increase of 4 to 10c in two weeks time.

    How'd you like them apples.

Any numbers being kited by government on what the fuel changes in budget might be?

Nothing being mentioned, but the duty difference between petrol and diesel will likely to be removed over the next few years.

And personally, I would put money on the motor tax bands/rates being adjusted.

The only thing that has been mentioned is free tolls for EVs.

But as always, we won't know, till we know.

Eur/USD high two year (?) highs in August/September up at $1.20 compared to the start of the year sitting at $1.17 isn’t really that bad.

16k miles in my car would cost circa €3000 this year. Proposed price increases would add 1.6% to that bill.

Loads of other things to worry about other than that imo. If €50 is a big deal you need to question the ability to afford a car full stop really.

What about your time and the fuel cost of going to garage on extra trip?

15mins of my time worth a lot more than €2 so fvck it.

2.5¢/l rise in wholesale diesel prices yesterday. That will filter thru in the next few days.

Anyway, for those saying that they wouldn't be bothered filling up for such a measly rise in cost, Well, you might want to fill up the day before the budget, because every time they announce an increase in fuel duty, Drivers go MAD and que for ages to top up before midnight, Now that i never understood.
Fill up the day before the Budget, and dont waste half an hour queing at the pumps.

Well the news today suggests that Easy Jet are looking to have electric planes for short haul (<2hr) within the next 10 to 20yrs
    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-easyjet-strategy/britains-easyjet-aims-for-electric-short-haul-flights-idUSKCN1C21O6

So if a plane can be electric, why cant all new cars

    (jet fuel is kerosene)

i agree, current household of two people , and we have 2 petrol cars, one petrol bike, a diesel car and loads of two stroke garden tools.

I'm a fan of fosel fuels, but .. electric will come to dominate.

Enjoy the flexibility and convenience of Petrol/Diesel while you can.

“I’ve gotten messages from the governor asking, ‘Why haven’t we done something already?’” Nichols said, referring to China’s planned phase-out of fossil-fuel vehicle sales.

The governor has certainly indicated an interest in why China can do this and not California.

Markets can change very quickly, fossil fuel cars are heading for a sharp decline, yes there will be millions of them out there, but all new cars will soon be electric/hydrogen etc.

Just look at smoking.. over a short few years, nearly everyone is on e-cigs.

The problem for me is I live beside the N4 and work beside the N3 so both garages are a rip off. I do actually have to go somewhere else if I want cheaper diesel. I suppose the garage 5 minutes away beside my barbers is apparently quite cheap.

I spend an average of €100 a month of diesel, saving €2/tank would be nice but it's not realistic to drive anywhere for it and to be honest it's easier to save money by not buying an energy drink before work twice a month...

Sure you're already saving on the cheap tax anyway ;)

It's €2.30 in some places, as if McDonald's don't have enough profits they couldn't even keep the coffee cheap :(

Don't see it. Take a stroll through Hong Kong, Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai, Mexico City and tell me how you plan to replace all those cars within the next 10 to 20 years. Impossible. For the middle class and up, no bother. But you'll have a hard time convincing the blue collar guy who bought a clapped out Pontiac for $200 that he can't drive it any more. You'd need a politician to sign a bill to banned them (Best of luck getting re-elected) and you'd need to be prepared to take the financial hit from all the oil money backing it.

Not saying its impossible, but I'd wager 2 to 3 generations is a better estimate. Even here, I'm coming up on my 30s and I couldn't afford a new EV and by hells bells I'll buy one on credit.

Have you been to any of the cities I quoted? Its fossil fuel mecca. I don't see that changing any time soon. I know China have made deep dives into EV, but the same place halted all the factories around Beijing for APEC in 2015, only to start them a week later once all the worlds press had left.

I never said that they (ice) would vanish overnight.

So if you know prices are going up in a few days, then fill up and save a euro or two, that's fair enough. It's not like you can buy a year's worth of diesel though so you only save on one tank at most.

You can't make the saving on a weekly basis.

It’s hardly poor money management, I’m not losing €50 a year, I just don’t care to put in the required effort in order to make such a piss poor saving.

I don't even bother to drive out of my way when filling up to get a 1-2 cent per litre saving.
    It's not worth it.

If your time is really worth so little that it's worth deviating from your life to save a couple of euro before a price increase then that begats more questions than it answers tb

I remember a few years ago in the US with an american friend of mine. Gas prices were somewhere around 2.12 to 2.17 per gallon. He had a a car with a 15 gallon tank and it did 30 mpg. We drove around for 20 minutes, at least 10 miles, until he found a station selling gas at 2.12. It cost him 70 cents in petrol and 20 minutes driving to 'save' 75 cents. (probably less cause he wasn't empty.):D
