Trade in advice

    Advice sought about trade-in..

Buying a new motor in January.

Have two old cars, and intend to hold onto one of them for another 2 or 3 years. Both were serviced annually, reasonably but not obsessively looked after. Both worth the same trade in value.

    Ford Focus 1.4 2004 80,000 miles
    Seat Ibiza 1.4 2005 100,000 miles

The Ford has been more or less rock solid, while the Seat had some minor electrical issues.

So which should I trade in and which should I keep?

Think you've answered Your Own question, the focus is more reliable so keep it

Neither car is going to be worth anything to a dealer as they are too old to resell for them. A dealer will give you nothing for a nearly 13/14 year old car, sell it privately and negotiate a discount off the new car for buying without a trade-in. I'd keep the Focus and sell the Ibiza privately. The Ibiza may appeal to a learner driver and be easier to sell.

Thanks for the advice. The dealer is giving us 3k for trade in as we're buying new. I'm not sure we'd get that on the private market.

But you'd get €3000 discount for not-bringing a trade-in. Whatever you make in the market is your benefit.

The dealer is not giving to €3K for the trade in. He holding onto €3K of a discount that he would be giving you if you went for a cash sale. Depending on what you are buying you should be expecting 8% to 12% discount off the list price new car.

In fairness they might not get the full 3k without a scrappage car, but I agree that the dealer should be in a position a good cash discount, best to simply ask them for the best cash price without trading in

I'd agree keep the Focus - running costs Is guess would be similar with either car but if you've had no trouble with the Ford then that's the one you should keep

@pinapples price the car at another dealer same spec etc but as a cash buyer without a trade in

Correct me if I am wrong, but the official scrappage scheme is finished?

But would he realistically get 3k discount with a straight sale? Doubt it. 3k for the Ibiza sounds fair enough to me.

Yes he would, depending on what he is buying. I recently got 3K off, with a trade in, on a Passat. There is another post on here for someone with a Tiguan who got 3K off.

8% to 12% of the list price. Otherwise you are giving away money to the dealer

Many manufacturers are running what they would see as formal scrappage schemes, some of them are simply a straight discount but others are not - i.e. I was offered 4000 scrappage with a car worth almost nothing off an i30 but only 1500 discount if I was buying straight. Equally Ford were offering their full scrappage deal on a Focus even without having a trade in

We went to two dealers - one offered 2.5k and the other offered 3k. Exact same proposition. Every dealer and sales executive seems to offer something different.

I'm not too worried about what I'll get back for the old car at this stage (I'd nearly pay to get rid of it!). I'm more concerned about which of my old bangers is more likely to last another two or three years of daily commutes down the M50. In fairness, either will probably do the job.

When it comes to these scrappage deals its the car manufacturer that is offering the scrappage discount/contribution so it's very unlikely that a dealer would be able to match that figure with a straight deal.
