Old DART station entrance on Amiens St

Just wondering if anybody knows why IE can't reopen this entrance. I don't think it's been in use since the mid 90's. Is it an anti-social behaviour issue or something?

Surely it would make sense to refurbish it and open it back up as platforms 5, 6 & 7 are very close to it. It would avoid many commuters having to walk all the way down from the main station which is a fair distance.

Agreed. It could at least be opened during rush hours, and closed later in the evening.

Always suspected part of the reason was to bring more footfall past the businesses inside the station.

Wow, that would actually be infuriating if that's the case

    My thoughts exactly.

I would have been quite young in the mid nineties. Does anyone have a picture of this entrance or a link? Platform 7 would be the usual arrival / departure platform for my trains (should I choose to use the train to town). Is there really a hidden / blocked entrance there?

I'll have to look out for where that emerges inside the building next time I'm there. Anyone know where? I'd know Connolly quite well.

If memory serves, when you come down the ramp, straight ahead there is a door which would lead to the old staircase.

That's correct. Blocked by doors now.

    And the fire escape?

Door is still there, you can't miss it. You'd have to walk past it to get to the new lift.

I took these this morning. I took the fire exit pic first, then turned 90 degrees to the right and took the lift one

I still cannot believe that they don't reopen that entrance... anyone in IR here in the know?

Wasnt their alot of junkies and other dodgy elements that hung around that entrance prior to its closure? Maybe there was security issues involved in thr decision to close it.

We just brought the LUAS to Broombridge! There is hope in everything

A lot of work needed to get it up to scratch.

It's a big screw you to customers... probably few stations in the world that you have to walk half a kilometer in the station at least to get to your platform. Especially for "Rapid Transit"

If I'm correct, the suburban entrance was closed at the time of Luas opening and the current concourse layout being created. Having a single entrance is useful for fare enforcement reasons. However, certainly at rush hour having the second entrance would be useful.

I'd rather walk along the street to the "old2" entrance than walk through the main station.Let's get it opened up at least for rush hours.

It was closed a good while before that I think - there were still buses using the ramp when the switch happened

Ask the local Garda station to include Connoly on their regular patrol route (which they ought already be doing) and make sure they stop by this entrance a few times a day at random times, if the junkies keep getting arrested under the public order act and loosing drugs they've paid for, spend the rest of the day in a cell with a blown high, they'll eventually get the message that this is a no junkies zone it's to be kept clear for the people paying for their methadone, so could you kindly do them a little favor and f---k off somewhere else
They need to do this for the front of COnnoly and Luas area as well.
This entire area needs to have the message sent out again and again 'JUNKIE FREE ZONE'. They need to do the same with the liffey boardwalk, make them understand there are a few areas just totally off limits to them, if you wanna hang out in an alley somewhere fine but not in these tourist/working people areas intimidating people and begging them for money "far a hastel".

This is the way NY does it, hanging around in groups outside shops, supermarkets, rail stations etc is considered intimidation and they are arrested (not "moved on" cos they'll just be back, arrested). Arrested is better because it's a much bigger inconvenience, they search you, your drugs are confiscated and your high gets blown, it's annoying and an inconvenience. They'll eventually realize it's not worth it just to hang out there. To really seal the deal, have the Minister for Social Protection sign an executive order saying anyone who is convicted of any offense (including such public order offenses) automatically looses any free travel pass they have.

They instead just leave the place for them carte blanche and let security deal with their tantrums and freak outs, and they've only the power to push them off IE property thats not enough of a deterrent, it's time we took this seriously it's an absoloute embarrasement to me as a native citizen walking through Connoly out the door telling Americans or Chinese folk about lovely places in Dublin then you see two creatures who look like the mutants from Futurama having just crawled out of the sewer "ahhhhh jayzuz ye stupid b1tch Nahhalie wherz me bleeeeeedddddin blow what did ye f&&&&&kin DO TO IT!!!! YE STUPID B2TCH!!! I'LL BATE DE BLEEDIN HEAD OFF YE YE STUPID C*NT WHERE IZ IT??? IS IT UP YER F----G ARSE? ARSE!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"I don't bleedin know it's your not mine ye bollix ye ye won't beat the bleedin head off me i'll puk de face off ye if ye say dat te me again" (makes 6 attempts to drag on ciggarette but keeps hitting cheek on either side of mouth then the nose then the chin then eventually the mouth)
    (actual conversation from earlier today)

I know I know addition is a medical condition just like heart disease...sure...but my sympathy goes out the window when your condition causes you to be a danger or menace to others and you are not seeking or engaging with treatment. We need to crack down on them, and maybe if they are convicted of a public order offense (or any offense) it should come with mandatory in patient detox after you finish your sentence, even hold them for a year after detox to ensure there is no relapse (which will happen soon as they go back to their old group of friends otherwise)

There's a methadone clinic literally 100 metres away from the old entrance to Connolly. Good luck with your idea.

i checked on google maps and it's actually only 88 metres. Hard to miss them when passing by, any time of the day. They are really good at getting out of bed early though. Shame to see their kids with them though.

I agree too. This could certainly help to reduce passenger congestion during the busy morning and evening rush hour periods.

It's been the same junkies hanging around there for years now, I cycle past them every day, I've almost become fond of some of them!
Anyway they seem harmless apart from buying and selling zimmos etc. They are no reason to not open the doors. I live on the Dart line and hate Connolly because of the f*cking 20 minute walk to get out of the kip, it's not King's Cross ffs!

It wouldn't take you 20 minutes on a zimmer frame.

Yeah I think you know the point I was trying to make was that it shouldn't take as long to get out as it does, jasus

They opened a 2nd entrance to Pearse and it seems to work quite well. Its opened only during limited hours supporting rush hour, helps avoid congestion on the platform. The footfall also supports new business at the entrance.

I dont see the methadone clinic nor fare evasion as being valid reasons for not having a train station entrance.

Is it to do with the physical building, dimensions of the access points and the volume of people that would use it? Health and safety issue in that regard?

They have a second "rush hour" entrance at Tara Street also.

Theres realistically 3 at Heuston also. Connolly has a closed entrance and a closed set of steps outside another (realistically not theirs to open though)
