2010 VW Jetta issue

    Hi All,

Have been having a few issues wit my jetta for the last few month. Back in June that car started overheating. I brought it to the garage and they cleaned it out and said there was a blockage in the pipe and it should be good now. It was grand up until 2 weeks ago when I noticed the fan was on after a short drive which never happened before. I switched back on the car and the needle was over 90 degrees on the gauge. I topped up the coolant and that seem to do it but then when I was driving it a day later I noticed that the needle was rising very quickly. I turned on the fan but the air was only a little warm yet it was telling me the car was fully heated. The needle would then drop back to 70 degrees and this would go on for about 10 minutes and eventually the car was fully heated.

I brought it back to the mechanic last week who said he was 90% sure it was the thermostat and it would need replacing. I got it back yesterday after it was replaced and its doing the same thing again this morning. I had to put more coolant in yesterday as they hasn't topped it up after doing the work. I can't see any on the group so I don't think I've got a leak. The fan seems to cut in earlier than it used to when the gauge on the car says its only a little bit warm.

Sorry for the long post but can anyone shed a bit of light on this?

Is it is the Jetta petrol or diesel?

Your mechanic sounds useless. "Blocked pipes" aren't something that really happens and 90% isn't a great level of certainty to be spending your money with and not topping up the coolant afterwards? Jesus wept, would any self respecting mechanic even tell a customer that?

Take it to another mechanic. You've topped it up a few times by the sounds of things and you are occasionally not getting hot air, it sounds like you are leaking coolant by one means or another. Get someone competent to check it out.

Some vag cars of this era are known to suffer premature water pump failure. Could be worth investigating. Also has the timing belt been changed yet? And is this a 1.6tdi jetta?

If it is a 1.6 to it's possibly 2 years overdue a belt and pump.

Being a 2010 car I'd say it's a 1.9 with a blown head gasket or as was suggested earlier a knackered water pump.
