Looking for advice on what car I should get?

Hi all so unfortunately my old car decided to kick the bucket last week the timing belt went in it while I was driving and now I've to get a new car. I'm looking for a much bigger car this time (My original car was a small Peugeot 206 1.1 engine) as I'm going to be driving from Gorey to Waterford 5 times a week. I'm hoping to get something with a 1.6 engine and diesel this time around. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I should go for. Some car models that have caught my attention are Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Passat. I'm open to all suggestions though as long as it's not a Peugeot :D:D

The focus 1.6 engine is Peugeot :)

    What's your budget?

Why the limit to 1.6 litre?

Just to cut down on insurance should I go higher?

Get insurance quotes before making a decision. In a lot of cases there may not be any difference or only a small difference between 1.6 and 2.0 litre especially in cars like the Passat, etc.

Sorry I don't understand your engine answer? They have the same engine?

Hopefully €5,000 but I'm open to all offers

The only Passat diesels you're going to get for 5k will be 1.9/2.0 litre. The later ones from 2010 onwards came in 1.6 but I wouldn't trust one that is being sold for 5k.

Ford, Mazda, Volvo, Citroen, all use Peugeot 1.6 diesel engines, 1.8 diesel in the focus is a better engine.

Why anyone would buy a Densil is beyond me. Shirley a 1.2 tsi golf would be more refined and faster and more reliable

    1.2 tsi on bottom .

I'd be looking at the Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30 1.6 diesel. They are sister cars so underneath they are identical.

For example this if it's genuine mileage:

Why would VW then bother developing and selling a diesel engine? Petrol makes more sense to certain people but diesel can make more to people who do have a genuine requirement for them.

Yes, but now the diesel is considered ''evil '' now ,and we will see prices on petrol fuel go down and price of diesel fuel go up. The duty on each will change gradually, so that he extra MPG on the diesel won't be of benefit as the fuel will be costly. Doing slightly less MPG on a cheaper fuel will be cheaper running.

Where are they saying the price of petrol is going down? All that is suggested is that excise duty of diesel will increase bringing a litre of diesel closer to a litre of petrol.

And all internal combustion engine's days including petrol, are numbered. Diesel engines might become unpopular for the masses who don't really need them but from a commercial point of view they will still be around. The popularity of petrol will eventually diminish too as electric vehicles become the norm.
