    Hi All

Apologies if there is another thread along these lines. I'm looking at the different options available to me in regards to Broadband. I live near Russells Bar, currently have Virgin, 120Mb, but get about 50Mb through Wifi. Its a bit expensive so looking at Eir, but before I get anything I would like to know what sort of speed people can get from Eir or indeed any other provider.

I'm no expert but I would imagine that virgin would offer the best speeds of the various providers, eir wouldn't match them and all the other providers simply repackage the eir experience.

With Vodafone, getting 100Mb (92Mb realword) for €35pm.

Just get on to Virgin and tell them you're leaving.

    Bang-

    discounts

(Ask for the white virgin Hub if you haven't got one)

You have a couple of options available with your existing setup to boost Wifi speed (things like changing the wireless channel can have a major impact on the speed you get from a Wifi connection). My only advice to you is avoid Eir at all costs - probably the most incompetent "customer service" you'd ever have the misfortune of dealing with.

The Wifi is your bottleneck. Get a better router using latest Wifi standard (AC) and it will go further and faster. As others have said Virgin is the fastest network

Unless all your clients use AC then this is useless. A WLAN conncetion will only operate at the speed of the slowest node.

Not really - even one or two pieces of equipment capable of AC would make it worthwhile. Virgin Media give you the Hub for free which is running AC so no point not doing it.

Also no point getting a connection faster than what you can get on Wifi if you're only using Wifi (no LAN etc).

that's the max you are going to get from Wifi really no matter what provider
    limitations of the technology

That's just not true. My iPad has shown 114mb download on Speedtest, iPhone 131

it is and it isn't should have clarified a bit more

he would need to get a new laptop/dongle/router which supports AC

unless he upgrades his devices he will get the same max speed no matter which provider he is with

yes I was referring to his situation
that's the max you are going to get from Wifi really no matter what provider
    limitations of the technology
if he changes provider with the same devices he won't get any faster speeds which is a limitation of the technology

Some UPC modems just have crap wifi too. Cisco 3925 and Technicolor TC7200 are both very poor and chances are the OP has either one of these.
