Recognition of a foreign divorce in Ireland

Hi all - apologies if this has been asked before. I'm Irish and engaged to a non-EU national who has been married and divorced in another non-EU country. We are both currently living in Italy and submitted the application for a Nulla Osta. His was granted in weeks but I've just received word that Ireland won't issue mine as my fiance's divorce is not recognised in Ireland. So, now we are considering both seeking legal advice in Ireland or travelling somewhere else for an easier marriage - like Vegas. We are doing the big party with friends and family next year so we just want this legal box to be ticked. I have two questions: if his divorce is not recognised in Ireland, will a lawyer actually be able to do anything at all, or would it be a waste of time and money? And secondly, if we did get married somewhere quick and easy, would it be recognised in Ireland?
    Thanks all for any feedback.

You can apply to the Circuit Court to have the foreign divorce recognised here, see S29 of the Family Law Act 1995.
