I just want to find out other peoples experience with a name change on the deed poll. Myself and my wife where pressured into hyphenating our two sons names by an over bearing grandmother that had a hold over us and we are just now standing up to. Anyway long story short my wife’s name wasn’t hyphenated and we want the kids names the same as ours so we went to our solicitor to get the process started in the summer of 2015 and it’s still not done. We are finding that this time frame seems way to long and we just want to know how long others took, if they done it themselves or through a solicitor and which way was faster?

There is no need to use a solicitor at all. All you have to do is start using the new name and keep evidence of using it for a 2 year period.

If you do want to get some legal paperwork for it you can draw up the paperwork yourself, you just need a few sheets of deed paper. Then head down to a notary with a witness to have the forms notarised. Should cost you about €40 for the notary fee, but this may vary.

I changed my name 3 years ago using this method. No problems at all.

I am a lay person. Not a solicitor.

as long as it takes you to print out the deed and have it witnessed.

How long did it take for yours to be done once you filed the paperwork? Also where would I get the deed paper? I tried all the stationary stores in my area and none do it and I contacted a few online stationers and they would only sell them in packs of 500 for about 70-80 euro.

As mr incognito said, there is no waiting.

Cost is around €5 for deed paper. Available from legal stationary shops. The solicitor needs to sign the deed and that's it. You can get it enrolled but that's only need if you want to get a driving license in the new name.

    Have a look here. http://www.courts.ie/Courts.ie/Library3.nsf/pagecurrent/075D7770C94358068025804B005C294B?opendocument&l=en

I did it for my husband before we got married. Didn't enroll it because he doesn't need to printed out the documents on deed paper. Made an appointment to see solicitor who signed the document and that's it.

It's slightly different for a child. The parents have to sign the deed rather than the child. Getting it stanmped doesn't affect the process. You don't need two years of previous use. In ireland if you want to be called McGinnis magic pants you can. You may not be able to get a passport with this name if you can't prove that that's your name.

There is a place in Dublin, on the street just above Parnell street heading south you should be able to buy a few sheets in there for around 7€ delivered.

Once the notary / solicitor signs the documents that is it. The change is effective.

Regarding the deed paper, I just asked my solicitor for a few sheets and he obliged ( He knew I was coming back for him to notarise it)

Your solicitor is taking you for a ride.

My brother changed his in about 10 minutes, our mam just signed a few things with him

I was thinking he was alright, so as soon as you put in the paperwork it’s legally changed then?
