I bought the car a few months ago but I have no idea what this is on the key chain. I don't like holding unnecessary items on the key chain so is it import or can I throw it away. Cheers.

That looks like an alarm thingy that would be pressed into a receiver on the dash in order for the car to start. I haven't seen one in years though.

Haven't seen one of those in years. As far as I remember there should be a chip somewhere on the dash, underneath the steering wheel cowling or somewhere like that. It is for the after market immobiliser fitted in the engine bay and if you can't start your car someday because the immobiliser won't let it, you touch that fob off the little chip on the dash and it sends a signal to the immobiliser.
Anyway, even if I'm way wrong, to be on the safe sight, don't throw it out.

It looks like an aftermarket immobiliser thingey.

You still see them today in a lot of modern emergency service vehicles for some reason where you have to tap that before turning the key to get it started.

Looks to me like a key to manually disable the car alarm when the remote on the key doesn't work. Most likely there's a connector in either the glovebox or engine bay that it goes in to.

We have a few of very similar fobs in work, they are emergency battery fobs for alarm panels in the event of a loss of power.

I had one in a car for a long time. Just had it hidden under the seat. Never needed it until the day I changed the car battery.

Don't throw it away, but no need to carry it around either. Wrap it in plastic and hide it in the car.
