New wheels for Canyon CF SL...any advice please?

    Hi!

I have a Canyon Ultimate CF SL with full ultra...rim brakes..
I have had it for > than 5 years and ridden a lot of kms on her & done a few trips to the Pyrenees, Alps and Canaries...
I brought the bike into my lbs today and they advised me that the rim on the back wheel was nearly gone...concave etc...

So the wheels are Mavic Kyserium Elite S wheels... and I am looking for a slight upgrade...

I am a relatively stocky guy so I think aluminium... light and strong is what i am looking for...
I think Carbon wheels look great but I am not keen on the braking surfaces, the price and the crosswinds!!

Any ideas of options? My max budget would be €1,ooo...but probably more like 6-700!
Would it be an option to get a reputable wheel builder to build me a pair of wheels?

    Thanks a mil!

    A.

I know you said aluminium, but have a look at these.
I bought a pair of them recently, and I am quite pleased with them.
Braking in the wet is quite good, when you get used to them and cross wind is really not a problem with the 38mm rims. The weight quoted is accurate.
There is a 2 year guarantee with them.
I think, it works out better to buy in Sterling.
I ordered them and collected them in the Boucher Road shop and paid in Sterling.
On my best day, I could not be described as lightweight.

Dura ace c24s .. imo one of the best all round wheels out there ....and what you described that you wanted....pretty much is them!! Get them on sale price online for around your budget!

Handbuilt all the way... plenty of suppliers to choose from: https://dcrwheels.co.uk/, https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/, http://www.stradawheels.co.uk/
You can get to choose your own hubs, spokes & rims and don't have to rely on non-standard parts for repair.

Many LBS can build wheels too. I have a set built with Record Hubs, Open Pro rims and DT Competition spokes. I love them. Only slightly heavier than factory racing wheels with all the advantages as detailed above. I expect to have to replace the rim in time but the hubs should last forever

    Thanks!
I got a lovely set of touring wheels built by Cliff in 2 Wheels..
    - Open Pro Rims
    - Dt Swiss 240 hubs
    - Dt Swiss Champion spokes...
I could put them on the Canyon temporarily.. but asking Cliff to build a light & strong wheel would be a nice option!

I wouldn't be going with dura ace c24s if I interpret your I'm a stocky guy right. They aren't all they're cracked up to be either imo.

If I were you I'd pick up a set of ksyrium slr or there's a set of fulcrum zero wheels for sale on here well below your budget and look to be in great Nick.

For your money - get DCR to make you a pair with Tune hubs and AL33 rims. 1450g, somewhat aero (33mm rims), and top hubs.

Perhaps you should reconsider not going down the carbon route. I got a set recently of 50mm and have not noticed any braking difference over ALUs. Initially I thought I'd only use them dry, calm and summer but find that I've used them in all conditions without bother. Modern shapes handle wind better and it would seem that modern braking surface combined with the right type of pad reduces the gap to ALU braking performance.

What you get with Carbon is a set of deep section for the same weight as shallow rim ALUs

have a set of 50mm carbon clinchers from Mark in Spokesman wheels. great wheels. thinking of getting a 88mm clincher as well from him.

I haven't actually pulled the trigger on these yet...but they are top of my wish list, after much 'research' (when I should be working)...

For a deeper wheel, the Swisstop Hadron 485s look the total business too.

I gather you're happy with your set so, they are a great wheelset. How have you found them in the rain and wind ?

tetchy in the wind but no worse than Mavic Cosmics. you get used of them after a few minutes. have swissstop blacks and the brakes are as good as my Krysium Exaliths

Are your wheels the same as those listed by thekooman i.e. from Spokesman Wheels? If not then would you mind putting up a link to your wheels please?

Glad to see your comment on braking as after all one hears about carbon braking I was beginning to wonder was I just convincing myself the braking was good. I use Swisstop Black Prince too BTW.

Windwise the only other deep section set I can compare with was Planet X V shaped 60mm and they are considerably more stable than these

    Exact same

    Exact same

Actually see that link was to all the wheels but from boards exchanges with kooman before I know they are the same.

See also that Mark is out of the 50mm (not listed) which figures as he told me he was down to his last couple of rims and will be waiting on another delivery.

    They are the same as

    except 50mm
