Extractor fan and HRV

I'm looking for advice on a cooker extractor for a house with HRV system.
I don't really like the option of a recirculation fan myself.
I was thinking of putting in an actuator to open and close the duct when the extractor is on.
The engineer has advised against this and said to stick with a recirculation fan to avoid grease buildup on the actuator. Won't the grease that doesn't go into the duct just spread around my kitchen and living area if I go with recirculation?
