I have an 2000 e46. ASC and ABS lights are on on the dash. From google its probably a wheel speed sensor.

Brought it to my mechanic for confirmation and nothing shows up on his computer (some brain bee thing), some other faults did however He tried clear all the faults but the lights are still on. Is my only option a main dealer? diagnosis is 85€ in frank Keane or 120 in Joe Duffy! Is there any independents in north Dublin area that would read them for me. I'll be getting my mechanic to fix it.

That should just be an ABS sensor. Strange that it's not showing up on his reader. I wouldn't go near BMW. Definitely try to find an independant to read the codes again. I got that done for free last time, I had the very same issue. It took the guy 3 minutes. Turned out to be the nearside front ABS, replaced it with an ebay one, job done.

Hopefully someone will be along to recommend a place....(Im in south east)

Maybe your mechanic's computer cannot read the fault? Bring it to a BMW indy, there are a few in Dublin. Motor Confidence off the Naas Road being one.

Gave confidence a ring. €30 for the diagnostics. Some difference from Joe Duffy!

Got the diagnostics today. 10 minute job and only 20€. It was the motor pump, located the top right as u look at the engine. Have to source a new one now, probably go down the breakers yards root. Car isn't worth much.

    Do you mean ABS pump?

Post up a picture of the pump and a more detailed fault code if possible. I have repaired them before without using any new parts.

Sorry phone died. Yep it's the pump. He had an iPad and I had glance in and it just said motor pump and he showed me where it was. Said I needed a new one.

Ah yes that's the right fault code then. Basically the pump rarely goes and it's the plastic box attached to the pump that fails. If you can get me a picture of the full pump I can tell you if I can repair it quickly enough.

Great. I'll do it first thing in the morning, thanks.

It sounds like the abs pump alright, common for the solder joints to break and cause issues. If u replace the unit you may have to code the new one in, it's like that on the e39 so I imagine the e46 is similar.

    These any use?

An update of sorts. Shietpilot, who couldn't have been more helpful, gave it his best shot at fixing the controller but to no avail initially.

In the last week however the lights have started go out sometimes. It lasted for 2 or 3 days the last time. They go back on anytime I brake hard to see if they'll actually stay off. The abs kicks in no problem but the lights come back on a few seconds later and the abs won't work anymore while they're on.

I'm hoping that it could be a simpler fix than a new pump as the car simply isn't worth it. Clutching at straws but hoping someone mite have some advice. Is it still definitely the pump or controller it works intermittently?

Its probably the dsc unit itself, I sent my e38 one to bba remanufacturing in the uk to be repaired and they did it for less than half the cost of a second hand unit.

Similar issue on an e36 i had a few years back. Bought a second hand pump on ebay, it was changed by chelmsford motors and it solved the issue.

Found this one on eBay. Has the exact same part number as mine I think. 6751767 . Will I have to get it coded to the car still? My mechanic will swop them no problem but hasn't got the technology to code them.

Yes, it needs coding, go back to Valdas at Motor Confidence, he probably has one or will know where to get one & he can code it. Kilcock auto dismantled usually have a few e46 in for breaking. Check Done Deal.

Got sorted in the end during the week. Got the pump from eBay and Valdas fitted it in a couple of hours. €100. Did the NCT last night and passed on the brakes. However it failed on rusted wings. Didn't want to start a new thread but will these fit it. http://www.adverts.ie/cars-for-breaking/bmw-e46-wings/13222043
Mine is just a standard 2000 318ci. These are from a 2002 coupe but I think it was an m sport model which is what I'm concerned about.

Should be fine. Excluding the M3, I'm pretty sure there's only two different types of wing for an E46 Coupé - it depends on whether the car is pre or post facelift. As those are from a 2002 car you shouldn't have a problem, the facelift didn't come until mid-2003.
