    Dear all,
I was registered as living in Germany with my German wife but I was commuting back and forth to Ireland for work.
Anyway i did my driving test in Ireland during this time. Now I am trying to convert irish licence to a german one but they wont do it since they say I should have done it in Germany i.e. the country you are registered in.
The only option is that they send a letter to ireland and somehow ask them if i was resident there. Does anyone out there know if this would work ? or has done it before.

In broad terms, you must present to the licencing authorities in Germany and apply for a licence there proving you are resident in Germany. You must submit your licence with your application. The local authority will contact the RSA who will verify your record and that you haven't been banned etc. and your German licence will be issued by the authorities. It won't cost any more over there than it would for a local. There is a chance you may have to supplement your application with a 'letter of entitlement' but it shouldn't be a difficult task.

Thanks cantdeside but the problem is that I got the licence from ireland when i was registered in Germany. Now the german Führerscheinstelle wants to know if i was resident in ireland 185 days when i applied for the irish licence. They wont convert a licence if i was living in germany and did the test in ireland.

Firstly, if they won't exchange it, you are not required to exchange it. You can drive in Germany on your Irish licence as long as you like. They're all EU licences. You would be in trouble for renewal and it it's ever lost or stolen though.

I really don't know if I can help but what kind of proof are they looking for in terms of your residency?

EU licence. No need to exchange whatsoever.
