Advice - how to get back to the rock?

    Hi folks,

The last few years have been pretty hard on the ol fitness. I went from rock climbing at least one day a week, regular hiking, fitness boot camps to no exercise, two kids plus almost three stone.

So I'm three years off 40. I'm three stone over where I want to be. I have back issues (two slight herniated discs) which I had significant issues with intermittently for years. Seriously screwed for around six months three years ago when it looked like surgery might be necessary. Thankfully it healed and with a daily stretching program from a physio I haven't had a recurrence.

But the back knocked my confidence and I live in fear of core intense exercises lest I hurt myself again (which I know, is the opposite of what I should do). I would love to do some weights work to tone the upper body up as well but same issue.

I am getting on top of the diet and getting back running 3/4 times a week (incl Parkrun) but I feel lost in a gym. I work in Dublin city centre so I was thinking about personal trainers or classes around Baggot Street at lunch time. But don't want to be doing the truffle shuffle in the middle of an instagram fitness shoot.

So I suppose I'm looking for general advice. Was anyone else in this situation and how did they address it? Should I just suck up classes? Should I try and identify a personal trainer who I could work with?

    Goals:
Weight Loss (which I know is 90% diet but when I exercise well I eat well and vice versa)
    Core strength increase
Upper body strength - toning and deal with man boobs (which I know is 90% diet but would appreciate feeling that I am targetting them anyway).
Increased flexiblity and weight loss towards a return to rock climbing before I turned 40 in three years.

    Quad

Are you still seeing the Physio? If yes, then they could possibly advise on that weight exercises would be ok for you to begin with as they would know your history. Seeing as you have an issue with your back I would advise seeking professional advise before you start so that you do not exacerbate the back issue.
