There is whole thread in here on the Rav 4. If you type it in you should find it. I have heard people complain about the lights on them not being very bright and some other things like software for the sat nav that kind of stuff. They are a nice looking SUV from the outside but the inside is a like it or loath it design and they are around a while now. Are you buying second hand or brand new?

Toyota went away from the D-4D engines because they were old and would not meet Euro6 emission regulations. Toyota don't sell enough diesel cars in Europe to invest in designing a new range of diesel engines and they want to focus on hybrid technology so it was cheaper to buy one already developed by BMW as a short term solution until diesel goes away. Time will tell if that was a wise move or not.

Also the current Rav4 is near 6 years old and coming to the end of it's life with a new model on sale sometime next year. There are better similar type SUVs for sale out there.

The N47 had its issues with timing chain in BMW and probably still has. However the engine is mounted differently in the Toyotas (it's traverse) and it makes it much easier to fix should it goes bad.

Toyota is also known for excellent service - that's what keeps folks coming back (first car sells the sales man, the second the service manager) - and if anything needs to be fixed, you will not see the middle finger as you more often do with German brands.

If mileage isn't going to be high, then is diesel the right option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 GerOReilly

I Test Drove a Comfortline Tiguan today. 2.0 tdi. 115bhp. Plenty power. Ride a Bit Choppy. Im Wondering would the Rav 4 be a More Comfortable Drive?...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Have a look at the Ford Kuga. Yes they have been around a few years too but having recently been a passenger in one on the trip back from buying it in the UK, it was fairly comfortable and they received a facelift last year so the touch screen Sync 3 infotainment system is quite good. You would really need to be looking at the 2.0 diesel though for poke rather than the 1.5 as it's quite a heavy car.

A test drive doesn't cost anything apart from an hour of your time.

I disagree on not buying a RAV4 because there's a new model "soon" (it won't be 2018). If you don't think the design or the entertainment system is dated, then why would you care about that? The current model being around for a few years means no unexpected surprises.

If reliability is one of your main concerns, you could do a lot worse.

Just my 2 cents, I'm not per se a Toyota Fanboy, but every time I look into buying a new car, I always end up with a Toyota again. Reliability and TCO being my main priorities.

Out of interest where did you hear there wasn't a new model coming in 2018?

Also the RAV4 like the Avensis now use BMW diesel engines with a track record of not being very reliable. I wouldn't make the mistake of assuming that because Toyota stick those engines in their cars that they automatically become reliable.

    I haven't. I can't find anything about a 5th generation RAV4 anywhere either.

    What I know is they'll bring out a RAV4 Adventure in 2018:
    https://www.toyota.com/upcoming-vehicles/rav4
Which is still a 4th gen RAV4 with a bit of extra features. Why would they do that if they release a completely new model in the same year? Noone would buy the old model in the fancy trim.

You're of course right about the engine. And just sticking another badge on it, doesn't change the reliability. As far as I'm aware though there aren't any issues out of the ordinary with the N47 engine in the Toyota cars. Toyota did make some alterations to it (different fuel injection, flywheel etc). I'd buy that before I'd buy a french or korean car, but maybe I am a bit prejudiced.

The Rav 4 are well proven @ this Stage allright. & they say the best time to buy a Car is When its coming to the end of its Production Life. All the Problems are Sorted & the Spec improves etc. My Local Toyota Dealer is Giving me a Rav 4 for a Day to take home. Very important to drive on the Roads you are driving every day. Iv heard great Reports on the Ford Kuga aswell , & i hear The Peugeot 3008 & 5008 are supposed to be good.

The Toyota Salesman told me a Facelift Rav 4 is Due in 2019 . Its a 6 year cycle .2013 was the Last big change. I know a Petrol would probably do cos were not doing big Milage , but im a Diesel Head. & to me a Petrol car is Always burning petrol. Where a Diesel isnt. Coasting into a Roundabout etc. Ur Diesel is burning very Little. & i Love the Torque of a Diesel. Plus my Mother-in-law had an 08 Rav 4 Petrol & it used to rob her. She now Has a 151 Ford Jeep. Can't think of the Name but its smaller than the Kuga. 1.5 diesel. Low Tax & would run on the Smell of Diesel.

Seat Ateca handles better than the Tiguan. Also looks better and you get more for your euro

I wouldn't pay much attention to cars sold in the US. It doesn't always have a bearing on what is available in Europe as the markets are totally different. Toyota have a range of SUVs that are not sold in Europe. Sales of the current Rav4 in Europe have diminished as the model is aging and it's losing ground to rivals like the Tucson and Tiguan, another facelift or major revamp will be on the way to keep it competitive.

I saw the Seat yesterday. Nice Looking Allright. & Scoda have one out aswell. Too many Choices. 😊. So the Tigun is Based on the Golf Chasis , is the Kuga based on the Focus ?..& is the Rav 4 based on the Auras or the Avensis?...

It's still a better source than claiming there will be a new model out of thin air. Do you have any source that indicates that there will be a new model 2018? I do follow your logic (that it's time for one), but I can't even find a rumor supporting it.

Also, a facelift is not the same as a new model. A facelifted 6 year old car is still a 6 year old car, in a new dress. If someone's interested in the car, and doesn't mind the way it looks, I can't find any reason why the fact (if it was one) that a facelift is approaching should stop them. On the contrary, it's a good reason to put pressure on the price.

Wikipedia is a good source for this sort of thing.

Current RAV4 is based on "New MC" platform: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_MC_platform#New_MC

Current Kuga is based on the "C1" platform: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_C1_platform

    etc.

Toyota are very coy about new model releases/leaks until near their launch dates, I remember details about the current Rav4 were not leaked until very close to it's official press release date. Anyway this going off on a tangent now.

Indeed, I drove one in Austria for a month or so earlier in the year. 2WD but 2.0 diesel, was a fine car to be fair for what it was.

When coasting (foot off accelerator) neither a diesel or petrol burns anything. The wheels are driving the engine.

    As is the Rav 4.
That was the case in the late 00s anyway.

If you're doing small mileage and keeping it long term the hybrid RAV4 might be worth trying out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 GerOReilly

Brought the Rav 4 home today for a Test Drive. Loved it to Drive. Felt more Like an Avensis than an Auris. Away more Comfortable on the Road than the Tiguan. Woudnt be a fan of the Dash , Controls etc. But then again iv been driving a VW with the Past 8 years. Plenty of Power . It waa the 2.0 diesel. BMW engine 161 reg . Not sure of the BHP. A bit Rattly/Creaky behind by the Booth allright. But i suppose they are more Hatchback design.
