Im a fool I know, but I can't find an answer. So basically I picked up what I think was a nice bargain in the north almost 2 months ago now. I got it insured and the insurance company said nothing about the northern reg. I have the complete V5c form, but I didn't send it off becasue I gather that they wont post new one to Irish address.

I intended to clear it but now im not so sure and might sell it on. How can I prove I own it though without a V5C in my name?Do I even officially own it at this point? And how much **** am I in for not clearing it right away? Im in dublin.

Yes you are correct, the UK will not issue a V5 to an Irish address.

99.9% of uk registered cars in Ireland for sale on donedeal are not the named owners on the V5.

Technically its against the law to sell a uk registered car in the state, but it's done very frequently and it's normal to give the V5 with it.

It also not the end of the world if you don't have the v5 as you can get an export cert from the DVLA

I know the OP has the v5, but if he didn't, I don't think the DVLA will just send out an export cert, how could he prove to them he owns the car?

I can definitely answer this as I've got a few export certs, the dvla contact the police to check if stolen and also contact current name on the lost V5 and get them to sign a legal declaration to say it's OK and if they don't revert within 30 days they will automatically issue the cert. This is why I'm waiting near 6 weeks now for a cert.

The V5 is not a proof of ownership document. It's only a cert to prove the car details with the registered keepers name

Wow did not know that was possible, wonder was that always an option?

I certainly remember cars laying in yard or being parted out cause the v5 was lost, maybe it just wasn't worth the effort.

Your insurance company will pass on your details to Revenue after you have it insured with them for 6 weeks.
New powers given to the Revenue in the 2010 Act oblige insurance companies to file information to the commissioners on motorists who insure a foreign-registered car for more than 42 days.

it is not legal to sell it on as it is, you must present it for VRT within a period that you have exceeded.

As your Ins Co will have passed your details on to Revenue, you will be liable to a "fine" for late VRTing.

So if I want to clear it now and do it the book, how do I proceed? I have the V5 form, and still have the little slip from it. .notification of intent to export that I have to send to England. How much of a fine should I expect?

    False information there.

Insurance Co will report to the Garda. Then Garda to Revenue.

Revenue will charge a vrt penalty for the number of days in the state unregistered. From memory is the "vrt amount" X "# days" X 0.1%. So if vrt is €1k and you wait 60 days, the penalty is €60

you can forget about England. All you need do is hand the V5C to the VRT people when (if ) you present it for re-registration.

Any fine would be a percentage of the VRT amount per day late. Not a vast amount I suspect. I don't know the exact formula

Thanks for the answers lads, If I want to sell it on before clearing, how much did I mess up by filling in section 6 of the V5 ( new owner details)

    Firstly it is technically illegal.
Any prospective buyer will be liable for the VRT plus the fine for late VRT clearance upon registering.
The V5 has nothing to do with this country apart from being the vehicle identity document that allows this state to register the vehicle.
