A friend is very keen on one of these (2010). Currently up for €7950. Advertised as mint with FSH and one owner. 123kms on clock. Anyone care to pass on their experiences / knowledge on said motor?

That car is probably about €2000 overpriced.

There are literally hundreds of these cars for sale, so many that you can pick your own colour and spec.

Why are there so many for sale? Because they're rubbish, the DPF and DMFs give trouble in them and they're known for gearbox issues. I know several people who own them and every single one of them have had engine trouble of the serious type. Two work colleagues owned them and had to get replacement engines (which are very difficult to source apparently as they're so sought after...which doesn't bode well for any potential owner)

There are so many better cars on the market, so unless the car was dirt cheap, which it isn't, then I'd look elsewhere.

It's no bargain anyway, here are a few with similar mileage for less:

Alot of these cars coming in from the UK cheap with high mileage and then clocked here so make sure any service history is validated by ringing the garages rather than just accepting a stamped service book.

Thanks lads, really appreciate the feedback and I know you guys are well up on motors knowledge. So, on the back of that, what would you suggest ? Has to be white. That's a must. She will not do enough mileage to warrant diesel purchase so a petrol variant, something along the visual lines of the insignia, so 5 dr hatch, approx 8K budget ? Thanks again :)

    Thoughts on this ? https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mazda-6-sport-09-nct-1-19/16256512

She's most likely going to have to source a UK car as I'd say there is virtually nothing to suit her in this country. White cars are scarce enough without limiting yourself to petrol only. A quick scan on donedeal shows zero options for her criteria.

If she wants to source a car from the UK, then a 2.0L petrol Mazda 6 or or Mondeo would be good cars and suit her needs well.

She could have this car in and VRT'd for just over her budget.

The car costs £4995 (€5500), VRT is approx. €2450 and €300 to get it home although as its a private seller if you were to get £200-300 off the price then that would cover the cost of getting it home.

Funny I posted a link to a very similar car in the UK. Anyway, stay away from the 1.8 petrol, they have an unhealthy thirst for oil due to poor quality oil seals.

The car I linked to is the facelift model and 2 years newer, has almost half the miles, is the same €570 to tax and will be easier to run than the 1.8. Its also much better spec's and a nicer car all round.

Are they really that bad? Have had several in extended family with no issues. Considering a facelift 163bhp estate myself..these OK?

I have no idea to be honest, I am going on what I have heard from friends/colleagues who have owned 09-11 models and none of them have anything good to say about them. They are extremely common and so I guess with the more cars there are then the more stories you hear about faults/problems with them.

Whatever about reliability they are not nice cars to drive. Excessive engine and road noise, poor cabin design and silly electronic handbrake. Heavy on fuel also.

Far too much going on in the central control panel also, about 200 buttons.

A white 8th gen Honda accord 2.0 in type s spec would have the looks and reliability she'd be after.

    Annual tax is €570
Finding one would be difficult-ish maybe UK?

There's quite a few late reg 7th gen accords knocking about but they're €710 or €750 to tax a year and an old model

I had one as a company car (shocker!). It was very reliable for me and put on almost 150k kms troublefree apart from a sticking boot-lock which is a well known issue. It was a well specced model which is essential in my opinion, the S and SC are grim.
I've gone to a Mazda 6 since, and to be honest that really exposed the Insignias shortcomings. It's far more economical, much roomier, far sharper to drive. The dashboard was indeed a mess of buttons, the car felt cramped.
Not sure I'd risk an earlier one, they had a lot of issues with engines. I'd try stretch to the 2013 facelifted model if at all possible. That improved the car greatly.
