Is there any experienced CBT therapists in Galway?

    Hi everyone,

I am looking to avail of some CBT in Galway for anxiety, low mood and chronic illness related issues.

I`ve been to counselling a number of time in the past which is a positive therapeutic intervention for issues such as this but in my opinion, it only achieves is weekly offloading of stress rather than acquiring any proper coping mechanisms.

I`ve had appointments with physiologists / counselors before who have put forward the case that they are competent to deliver CBT therapy but clearly they weren't, and clearly they were "taking a stab at it" (in my opinion).

I think there is a heck of a lot of psychologists out there that put forward the case that they can provide CBT as for the past 10 years it`s the new trendy side of psychology and it`s what more and more people want to avail of these days... But I think the vast majority of those have their psychology degrees or postgraduate studies and then tac on a part-time 6/8 week CBT course in the evenings to then begin providing CBT as well as counselling as a means of attracting more customers to their practices.

I am not bashing psychologists ... by any means, they do what they need to in order to be a success in business also keep the customers coming in the door. I respect that... needs must and all...most are self employed..... but I am inquiring as to whether anyone knows a legitimately trained highly experienced CBT therapist in Galway that really know what they are doing and that could help with some problems i need to tackle in my life....

    Thanks

CBT is an accreditation, so any suitably qualified counsellor can do the course and pay their membership fees. By its nature it's a tack-on course.
You probably already know, but a counsellor that gives great results for one person might be found absolutely useless by another. I hope you get a good recommendation of a suitably experienced CBT counsellor!

Now just my 2c. Your post seems critical of psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, etc, by talking about tack-on awards, part-time evening courses, self-employed, needs must etc. I think that's the sort of negative thinking you need to address yourself. If you start therapy with such a mindset & outlook you're sabotaging your chance of success with that counsellor.

How many of these other people are you also critical of: teachers, your parents, past managers, workmates, restaurant staff, your other half, etc. Just something to chew on mentally. Good luck with the counselling.

Unfortunately counselling and CBT just doesn't work for everyone. It didnt work for me after quite a few attempts. I agree with you in that counselling only offers an offloading of weekly stress and no coping mechanisms. Personally ive only been left feeling frustrated and annoyed by the amount of money ive wasted on sessions but with that being said there are lots of people who swear by counselling and CBT so everyone's different.
I feel like counselling and cbt is really suited to people who have mild depression and anxiety or are dealing with a sudden life change. I don't feel its suitable for any sort of deep rooted issues or long term mental illnesses like anxiety disorders but thats just my experience.

Your best option might just be to talk to your GP. They could put you in contact with a psychologist who would be better trained and experienced than a counsellor and they might also suggest medication options with you.

I didn`t appreciate the tone of that post one single bit.. It had an unnecessarily harsh and judgmental tone to it and was absolutely unnecessary.

I have dipped in and out of counselling for the past 7 years for a variety of issues I`ve experienced in my life. I have previously had some great success in the past with counselors and equally some very disappointing attempts at solving issues through others. I have given any therapist I`ve attended previously full attention, co-operation, and approached every session with an open mind, never been judgmental of any therapist I`ve encountered previously, and always allowed adequate time and sessions to form an educated opinion on whether I think they are suited to me current needs...or not.

I have had 3 experiences with counselors / psychologists attempting to provide CBT for me to which were clearly inexperienced which lead to what I feel is my personal observation and experience (not criticism) of these psychologists ability to provide same. I stress that i used the words "I think" in my previous post when referring to this. I also made absolute sure to explain that I didn`t come to this forum to bash physiologists and that it was just the impression that I gotten from my previous experiences....so why did you feel it necessary to post back, tuning my comment on it`s head with a response saying you felt that my "post was critical psychologists, counselors, psychotherapists, etc"... That is exactly what I was trying to avoid.. Completely necessary on your behalf and attempt to just be argumentative and stir s**t I feel.... (For what reason I don`t know).

In relation to your last comment on your post asking how critical I am of others around me such as teachers, parents, past managersm ect.... All I can say to this, is how dare you. You do not know me, anything about me, my personality, outlook on life or how I as an individual perceive the world around me, or my relationships with the people in my life. All I am to you , and you to me, is words on a page on the internet and nothing else. What gives you the right to make a snap judgement of a person after one single post on the internet i`ll never know. The mind boggles...

Finally, thankfully I am a psychologically stable enough individual to take your negative judgmental harsh comments on the chin and be able to carry on with my day relatively unaffected but you might consider for the sake of others next time before you begin to type on your keyboard, that this is the PERSONAL ISSUES section of the forum, not the soccer or chit chat section. There are many many people here on this section of the forum that are in a very bad places psychologically and emotionally that could have been tipped over the edge by such nasty judgmental comments in response to their post in a section of the forum that is meant to be a place of understanding, compassion, helping and support for others. I suggest you think about this very deeply for the future.

To finish, I will be immediately contacting the personal issues forum moderator to have this particular thread closed as it has already become what it was not intended to be and has therefore lost it`s purpose for which it existed.

@subscriber - this post will be closed, but not for the reasons you might expect.

You are correct - Personal Issues is an advice forum, and with that comes the caveat that you may not always get the advice you like. Members here give up their time voluntarily to provide those who post here with an alternate point of view, and while you are perfectly free to not take that advice, the expectation that you respect those who take the time to respond to you is still implicit.

Thread closed, and please read the forum charter before posting in PI/RI again.
