Current Mercedes range?

I had been thinking of getting a new (or newish) VW Golf, had toyed with the idea of a Golf GTE but I think they're a bit expensive.
I've noticed a load of Mercedes around lately and was wondering whether I should look at one of these but I don't know anything about the range or whether they're worth the money.
What would be an equivalent model to a Golf say approx €35K-€38ish, are some models more desirable than others or are there some to avoid.
I was thinking of a saloon model rather than the hatchback (A or B class I think).

When did a non specialist golf cost 35-38k?

The question is probably too vague to answer to be fair.

GTD/GTE/GTI are all circa €40K, just wondering if I could get something similar without spending that money or something better for about the same price?
I don't think Golfs are worth that sort of money, I'm curious if people think you could get a better Mercedes for that sort of money.

That's the typical price for a Golf GTE which is the plug in hybrid version of the Golf with the GTi trim. A GTi or GTD are around the same price.

OP, have a look at the CLA model, it's basically a 4 door coupe of the A Class hatchback.

You'll probably be looking at the 1.5 Renault diesel versions of the mercs for that money?

I'd say so. I know nothing of the current range. Then again, if there aren't a million miles off the price of a golf they aren't going to be a whole lot better. Time was when a w201 or w124 would cost as much as a small house or 3x an equivalent vw.

My thinking is if you're going bog basic engine wise you might as well get a cheaper car.

Thanks, I was wondering why they'd become so abundant lately, I didn't realise they'd gone all Aldi. The search continues...
