I was quite surprised to see a kinfisher in the Marlay Park pond yesterday and I was wondering how it ended up there. I know they are quite sedentary and I would be surprised if they breed there so I can only think it could be a juvenile looking to establish a territory?

Also there is no river or streat nearby (other than a tiny streams), could it have come from the Dodder or further?

Anyway, maybe it is a normal occurrence, I didnt expect it and it surprised me.

The young disperse each year and can go up to 50km. So, they can get about.

My own local river is similar. After the breeding season I see them much less frequently, as they wander a bit further afield in their territory and aren't as active as when constantly hunting to feed the young.

He's been there for a few years now, as long as the water is clean and there are fish to eat they're happy out. Theres quite a few streams and a big pond in Marlay so he lives off the fish there. Theres also little grebes as well as the various ducks and swans, coots and moorhens that live on the pond too.
