Hi. Have very recently taken up golf. Looking at joining a club. Stackstown is close to me and wondering what it's like to join as a beginner? Dont know anyone there and would be joining alone. Is it easy to get a game with others there.....am joining to try and improve.

The other option would be a club where I have some friends but it's a 40min drive away. Maybe it's the better option if I'd het a regular game?

    Thanks

Most clubs have a beginner night designated where you'd meet up with other beginners. Give them a ring and enquire. I'm not familiar with that particular club though. But most clubs apart from the elite ones are very anxious to get new members.

If you are planning to go gung ho on golf always pick the course nearest to you..

Can be one of the best parts about golf - practicing by yourself on quiet course - difficult if you have a 80 minute round trip..

    +1

I changed home course this year to one 5 minutes from my house. It's made a huge difference to my improvement and enjoyment of the game. Nipping down for 4/6/9 holes or 20mins practicing has been hugely beneficial.

But if you don't meet anybody and struggle to get out at weekends then you might not get the bite for it and give up. Will you really be going out to practice alone a lot as a beginner?

IMO having friends in a course already is a huge plus and 40 mins is not too bad. What club is it? Can't be any worse than Stackstown so that is a factor too.

    Hi op,
I was a member of Stackstown for years and it is a great club.
There are loads of clubs in that locality as well though.
Have you looked at Edmonstown ?
I played there recently and was very impressed.

Thanks. Saw edmonstown but it has a 5000 euro joining fee which I wanted to avoid my first year

I would always say go for the one that is most accessible to you.

You'll have no bother getting out in comps etc. Just don't be shy about sticking your name down in an empty slot. 99% of people are sound and won't have any issue with a "newbie" joining them for the morning. Just remember that you're not playing for anything besides the enjoyment so if you're stinking it up on a hole just pick the ball up and stick it in your pocket and take the X on the scorecard.

Once summer arrives you'll be delighted with the 5 min spin after dinner to get a few holes in.

Cheers for that. Close to me means a 20min spin, but take your point.

A friend of a friend mine has given me an unused set of clubs with contains a King Cobra SZ 400 unlimited driver. I see online there is some issues with this club. As a beginner can I use it, i wont be playing in any competitions anytime soon...
