Getting a dog neutered in Dublin

We have a 16 kg 7-year old adult dog who is of excellent temperament. I really do not want to do this (I feel his pain), but we have a new bitch in the house and my fella needs to get neutered.
So I am wondering, will I go to my local vet; or is it worth shopping around? Is there much of a price variation in getting your dog neutered? I have heard rumours that you will get the operation done for a lower price if you travel outside of Dublin.
What prices are people paying for Neutering?
    Many thanks.

You might save a few quid going outside of Dublin for your dog to be neutered or else you could spare the poor dog the discomfort of travelling a greater distance after his surgery by having him done locally.
Here we have to keep the neutered dog away from bitches in heat as they will help out when the bitch gives them plenty of encouragement.

You could always have the bitch spayed or else separate them when she comes into heat.

As knine says op, if you can, you'd be better off spaying the bitch than castrating the male... assuming you're not intending to breed from the bitch.
Although neutering males lowers their ardour significantly:o, living under the same roof as an in-heat female is usually too much to ask, and it will likely cause him huge frustration and anxiety (I'm reminded of the night my now 6-year old female GSD came home after we adopted her, she came into heat... I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the sight of my 11kg Westie, who'd been castrated 10 years previously, trying to hump this 37kg giant :o). I was morto for him :D

Our neutered dog actually tied with a bitch in heat... I didn't know that it was possible and nearly had a heart attack!!! They had to be kept separated after that until after she was spayed.

Thanks all for your comments. I omitted to add that during a recent trip to UCD, they found some other lumpy bits down under and considering these, the age of the dog, and the likelihood of prostate issues in the future, they recommend castration. So, sadly, he’s going for the procedure next week. We’ll stick with our local (top rated) vet.
We’ll get our new bitch neutered as well, the recommendation is to do this at about nine months old which is a while away yet.

The vet was saying allright that there may well be some humping when the female comes into heat. His last Hurrah, I guess :)
