Really need to see the figures to know how bad it is and what the best remedy is.

Check for leaks in the exhaust, an engine warning light might point to this as a cause.
On a cheap end of the market add some petrol additive to a tank of fuel and drive it hard in the days leading up to the test and see what that does to the figures, again without knowing how much it failed by this fix might not work.
