Down a pound! At least it's a pound in the right direction :)

Well done! When I started SW I lost a pound in my first and second week, I carried on and now I’m a target member over 2 years, so I really believe slow and steady wins the race.

Choc shot is a lifesaver! I make pancakes using 40g ready brek (hexB), then strawberries, toffee Muller light and the only syns is a little choc shot!

This is a hard post but here goes. I joined Slimming World almost 3 years ago as a very overweight man. I am and always have been an emotional eater and because as a man I find it hard to talk about my emotions I just ate them. So the weight piled on and on and I convinced myself I was fine.

After 1 year in Slimming World I had lost 5 stone and was a target member. It was hard, it was really hard some weeks. Crushing gains along with shocking losses. By the end of my journey there I was happy with how I looked and I even went so far as to allow my group leader use my pictures as before and after advertising on the internet.

Well it’s 2 years later and I’m back to where I started and I feel ashamed and disgusted with myself. I feel like an absolute fraud and I can’t belive I let this happen again. It’s like I see something going well and I deliberately self sabotage. I really want to start again but I’m terrified to walk back into that group after being heralded as some sort of inspiration looking like this. In one way I feel like I don’t need to be a member as such as I know the plan inside and out but on the other hand where’s the accountability of I’m just doing it alone?

I know it’s a pride thing too. It’s hard for me to admit I’ve slipped and failed at this especially when i had so many people willing me and wishing me to do well. I’ll be honest too and say that I feel my mental health is at all time low. I want to change and I need to change but I’m scared to admit I need help again.

What an honest post. I have been everywhere from 10 stone 5 lbs to 17 stone 12 pounds to where I am at the moment (13 stone 9 lbs as of Monday).
You did amazing to write the post. I know exactly what you mean about knowing the plan inside out but maybe needing the accountability of a weigh in.
The 1st class might be difficult for you to walk in to but I firmly believe that you will do amazing on your 1st week back.

I don’t think there’s anyone in a SW group that hasn’t fallen off the wagon, that hasn’t struggled, that hasn’t seen successes and failures. Take that step, go to class, you’ll be surrounded by people who understand what you’re going through.

Week 52 Down .5lbs at least it was not a gain! Had a good chat in group today and need to refocus , I also need to see how far I've come not what is left to do, losing all of this weight was not easy! I walked most days , food optimising not so great and syns were out the window Friday and Saturday night.

7.5lbs to get to target, 67.5lbs lost so far. Onwards and downwards!! Val

5-15 syns a day, how do I know how many is right for me? Is it weight based?

Yes. Very large folk can sometimes start off allowed up to 25 syns.
I think the idea is not to hit the full 15 every day and there's no rule says you have to use any syns at all in a given day. Many people find small amounts of syns handy for maybe a bit of cheese on a dish, or similar (or maybe the odd glass of wine, which whacks up the syns).

Ah ok. Last week I had nearly all the syns. I might try to aim for 10 a day instead of 15 :)

You can eat the full 15 every day - they don't say try not eat them all. They advise anything from 5 to 15. You can be the judge of how many in any particular day.
The thinking is if you deny yourself, you may be more likely to fall of the wagon and binge. So if you have had 10 syns, and you want a bag of crisps, then have one within your syns (5 left for the crisps).

I just read this thread from cover to cover and I’m definitely confused but I’m sure things will become clear once I join a group. Which I am planning to do on Monday evening.

I’m hoping some of you can clear a few things up for me first though. What’s the story with joining? How much does it cost and how much do I pay each week? Do I get a planner or cook book when I join?

I weighed 150lbs on my own scales this morning. I’ve no idea what a healthy target is to set. Maybe a stone and half first and see how I go from there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭jlm29

It’s €9 joining fee, and €9 per week. Sometimes a magazine has a free joining voucher, but I don’t know if there’s any around at the moment.
You set your own target. You can talk to the leader about what you want it to be, when she weighs you the first day.
The new members talk is with the leader, off in a quiet area, you sit into that on day one, and she will talk you through the plan.
    Good luck.
I’m gping to go back to class on Monday I think, I’ve missed the last few weeks!

Can I go to a different class because I'll be away for my regular Tuesday class? Just for this week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 405 ✭✭theoldbreed

Week 7 and I'm down 10 pounds. I joined to lose a stone, nearly there. How did I not discover slimming world years ago. It actually works!

Hey guys I'm on week 1. Im thinking of food 24/7 but proud of myself for actually sticking it!
Really hoping for a loss on Tuesday. Only thing worrying me is (sorry for the tmi) ive been constipated since I started.
Didn't feel great the 1st 2 days but put that down to sugar withdrawals lol.
The hifi bars are keeping me sane

Are you eating plenty of speed? I had the opposite problem when I started. I thought i would break the plumbing for the whole street. :)

Haha yeah my friend said the same. I am (I think) I'd have like 2 mandarin oranges straight after breakfast and salad or veg with dinner.
I am finding the speed thing confusing. Say if I have a breakfast that contains no speed and I feel full after, is it better to have some speed with it say like an apple or orange or none if I'm full. I'm just afraid I'm actually over eating when I don't need too

Whatever you have for breakfast, make a third speed... an easy example would be if you usualy have three eggs scrambled, have 2 eggs & use the remaining space on the plate for tomato & mushroom.
The idea is to decrease the food on your plate by a third & replace it with speed...

A lot of the time in work I've say two weetabix as my hexb. With things like that should I have fruit?

You should. For me, I definitely need some carbs in the morning so I have two slices of Be Good bread as my HexB, Philadelphia light (1.5 syns) and coffee. Rather than adding fruit to that somehow, I’ll snack on fruit throughout the morning - mandarins, apples, pears, grapes. I could easily have 4 servings of fruit in a morning. So when it comes to lunchtime I’m not starving and not craving bad stuff. Homemade soup full of speed or some flavoured couscous (1 syn) with lots of sautéed or roasted veg really satisfies me.

I’m still new to this and still learning so I’m open to correction. But I wouldn’t worry about over-eating speed foods. Always reach for speed if snacking and fill your plate with your speed foods first. Stick to that and you’ll do great.

First week over and done with, down 3.5lbs.  Happy with that, looking for more of the same this week!  Group wasn't as bad as I thought, although I found the meeting dragged on a bit, I can see why some folk just come in to get weighed and leave.  Will try and stay for meetings as much as I can going forward, but overall happy I joined and happy with the loss.

    Hi Guys

I joined my first class the other day. Really enjoying this I have to say, the fact you can eat anything is great!

Just wondering - I had beans and a (biggish) baked potato for lunch and then a quarter of a melon? Is this enough speed food do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 288 ✭✭ally_pally

A quarter of a melon sounds like quite a lot so I’d say yes. Sounds good to me.

Is there a limit to the amount of speed you should eat?

No there’s no limit, well within reason- you eat till your comfortably full and always have speed as 1/3 of each meal!

Hi I am new to this, so bear with me, I am currently a Slimming world member and have lost 2 stone 5lbs, I am currently finding it very hard I do a lot of exercise at least 5 days a week and i am finding my weight loss has really started to slow down as in down a half up a half etc. I know people say you are building muscle but I would still have at least a stone to go to get to goal weight. I am very good with my eating and syn everything. Any tips or advice greatly appreciated please and thanks!

Going to Tolteca at lunch, was going to get a burrito bowl with rice, peppers, onion, chicken, salsa, lettuce, (will skip cheese, sour cream), might get a bit of guacamole (small amount). Was going to give it 6 syns for guac and perhaps another 4 if oil used in cooking chicken etc. Any thoughts?

I was down half a pound last night. Delighted to see the scales go the other way after 3 weeks of eating and drinking (not to self never book 2 holidays in a row again!). I'm doing SP this week and I'm on day 3 and feeling really good about it.

Do you find doing SP for a week makes a big difference? I am completely new to Slimming World. First weigh in tomorrow! Hoping it goes ok. Didn’t plan ahead for the full week and I think I would have done better if I did. Need to work on having more speed foods too.

Down 2lb on my 2nd weigh in. 7lb overall. Stuck to plan 100%. Does the loss start to slow down after first week? I thought I'd lose at least 3lb tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 288 ✭✭ally_pally

It definitely slows down and people often have an extra big losses their first week. I was down 7.5 pounds my first week and anywhere from 0.5 to 2 pounds a week after that. It’s all progress though once the scales are going in the right direction. Well done!

I was the same on my second weigh in last night, down 2 lbs, was expecting at least 3.  Down 5.5lbs in two weeks so really happy as I wouldn't have lost it for not joining and following the plan (and actually sticking to it as I thought I wouldn't).  At least the scales are going in the right direction!  Haven't been able to do much exercise over the past couple of weeks with work and stuff so going to concentrate on it this week, get the heart rate going, will get that 1/2 stone mark done for sure come next Wednesday.

I find it helps to get me back on track. And really cutting out the potatoes, rice and pasta isn't too bad really. You need to plan for it though. Also, don't do SP until you know the programme inside out!

No problem, I haven't actually received any feedback for my food diaries either now you say it.  Suppose once you keep on following it and stick to the recommended amounts I am sure the results will be worth it.  Keep up the good work!

I'm rejoining again tomorrow. I've followed SW in the past and found it easy to follow the food plan and liked having the accountability of being weighed in. I just hate the meetings, I've tried a few groups and I get nothing from staying. Fingers crossed I get a decent loss over the next few weeks. I'm now half a stone heavier than I was the last time I joined and almost 2 stone heavier than I was at my lowest on SW. Good luck to everyone this week :)

What are the best wholemeal breads for SW and also any recommendations for Syn Free/low syn yoghurts? Thanks!

I have the Brennan’s Be Good bread. Two slices of that count as a Healthy Extra B. I’m not s big fan of yoghurts but Muller Lights are syn free and have lots of flavours.

I’m thinking about rejoining tomorrow too (for the third flipping time!). I’ve just gone back to work after maternity leave though, and I can’t make it to any class at the moment, so I don’t know if there’s any point! I can probably do a quick weigh in on my way home from work, but sitting in on the class with three kids is a total non runner.

Hi everyone great thread I find it very helpful. I weighed myself after Christmas and was horrified to see I was just short of 19st - I am 5’7”. Over a couple of months I brought myself down to 18st 4lbs. Wouldn’t bother me apart from back problem which being over weight doesn’t help. Then being fat shamed by a complete stranger was the motivation to join SW. 1st weigh in last Mon I was down 7.5lbs! Delighted as it was during a week there was a big night out. Studying for an exam this week and haven’t had as much exercise. WI is tonight - fingers crossed.

Wow well done on your losses so far! SW is a fantastic plan, I swear I wish I’d done it years ago. I’m at my target over 2 years now and still go every week without fail.
Good luck tonight with WI- Let is know how you get on?

I also can’t believe a stranger fat shamed you- that’s disgusting. Do this because YOU want to do it not because of some horrible person! x
