Smell of mould and musty taste from my tap water.

I live in Blackrock South County Dublin. I believe we are connected to the Leopardstown water reservoir.  Over the past few days there has been a bad smell of must/mould from our drinking water. It also tastes the same. Is there a problem in the area?

    Hi Mairead,

I just do not understand why you need this detailed information. It is in the Avoca Park area of Blackrock. Thanks

Water still smelling and tasting of mould in the Avoca area of Blackrock. We had to purchase bottled water today. There are huge roadworks on Avoca Avenue at the moment, I hope a pipe has not been dislodged or something.

    Hi Michael,

No improvement. Talking to two people over the weekend. One in Stillorgan, one in Blackrock. Both have noticed smell and taste from water. Seems to be a wider problem and looks as if it is the Leopardstown water reservoir causing the problem. Regards

It's all over the newspapers and Irish Water are telling me "As we are not aware of any similar instance in your area, we would like to investigate this matter for you. In order to do so we need those details." How do you not know about this?

    Hi Living Off The Splash,

We've been informed by the Local Water Department that you are served from the Ballyboden Reservoir.

This reservoir is an uncovered treated water reservoir and there is a project currently underway on-site to deliver a covered reservoir by Quarter 4 2018.

The sampling results for the reservoir indicate the presence of very low levels of an organic compound called Geosmin. It can result in some people detecting a slightly earthy taste or odour from their drinking water.

We can confirm that there is no threat to public health and all samples comply with the Drinking Water Regulations. We have increased our normal water quality sampling programme as a precaution to keep the situation under close review. We have put in place measures at the reservoir site to address this issue.

We hope this information will be helpful. If you have any further questions, please let us know.

    Kind Regards,
    Siobhan

    Hi Siobhan,

I live in Donnybrook and am having the same issue here. Do you know if we are the same reservoir/is this the same cause?

    Thanks,
    Aoife

I can confirm that Donnybook is also served from the Ballyboden Reservoir.

"We have put in place measures at the reservoir site to address this issue."

Care to let us know what these are?
The HSE have been consulted on this issue and measures have been put in place to address it including:

    - Increased sampling and visual inspections
    - Increased bird control and monitoring
    - Additional drainage
    - Increased dust control and monitoring

The EPA also audited the reservoir at Ballyboden on 23 August and are satisfied with the actions and monitoring in place to address this current taste and odour issue and that there is no immediate risk to water quality.

According to the World Health Organisation in their Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality geosmin has 'aesthetic concerns, not public health issues'.

Irish Water therefore can confirm that the treated water at Ballyboden complies with the Drinking Water Regulations. We have increased our normal water quality sampling programme as a precaution to keep the situation under close review.

If you have any more questions, please let me know.

    Kind Regards,
    Siobhan

Today, since first posting, I do not have a smell or taste of mould from my tap water. I can stop buying the 5 litre bottles at last.

When it wasn't there I missed it. Shows what a great privilege it is to be able to drink a nice glass of water straight from your tap. Regards

I'm also getting a mouldy taste from the water in our office in Athlone.  It's a boiling water filtered tap and the taste is just recent also.
