Did my dentist miss something?

I'm just wondering what I should do..

I went to the dentist on Wednesday for a check-up and a scale & polish.
The dentist I usually attend at this surgery was not there and I was seen to by another dentist, whom I'd never met before. (I also didn't know in advance my usual dentist wouldn't be there).

Anyway, when I was brought into the room, I told the dentist that I was there for a check-up and a scale & polish. I also mentioned that I thought something was wrong with one of my teeth; I pointed to a tooth on my upper right side.

For the past few weeks I've noticed if I rub my finger along the gumline above this tooth or in between the tooth, there is a rotten smell.
I also notice a foul smell in the morning, after brushing my teeth.
I had this happen to me before.

In 2016 I had this issue and when I went to my usual dentist he noticed I needed a new filling.
As he was doing the filling, I could smell that odour in the room which was obviously coming from my tooth. Anyway, that had sorted the issue.

So I said to this new dentist that I thought something was wrong with my tooth. He said nothing but proceeded to lower my chair and did an examination, calling out numbers and letters and other dentistry chat to his assistant.

After examining my teeth, he didn't say whether my teeth needed anything or that they were fine; he just moved onto the scale & polish.

Anyway, today I've noticed that when I rub my finger along the gumline above this tooth or between the tooth and the one beside it, that foul smell is still there.
Did he miss something during the exam?
If I don't need a filling then what is this smell and how come it's still there after an exam/scale & polish?

I'm scrupulous with brushing my teeth, flossing and using mouthwash so I haven't done anything wrong.

Should I go back and tell the dentist my concerns? I'm worrying that if he re-examines my teeth and finds no issues then I've basically accused him of not doing his job properly.

Also, if that is the case, how do I fix this problem?
Any advice is very much appreciated.

There could be a cavity between the teeth and X-ray would not go amiss. Maybe you have a set from recently and that would be ok too. If you have concerns go back and voice them.
