Vuelta 2017, Stage 6 :Villareal to Sagunto 204.4 km

No thread up so this to fill the gap. Five categorised climbs on the 204.4km route though with close to 30kms from the last summit to the finish unlikely to be much action from the main contenders with a big chance for the breakaway presumably.

... Looks like a proper one has surfaced. R.I.P.

At 204.4 kilometres, stage 6 in the Vuelta a España travels from Villareal to Sagunto. Five intermedate climbs account for a route that's tailor made for escapees.

Villareal is home to Villareal Club de Fútbol, a football club playing in the primera division. But today the town is the one and only departure place to the 6th stage of the Vuelta a Espana.

The first 13.4 kilometres are completely flat and after the passage in Nules the roads start to become sloping. Not steep at all, but with 48 kilometres done the riders crest Puerto de Ain. Following a short descent the Puerto de Eslida appears. The climb is averaging 5.6%, while is is crested at kilometre 59.8.

A gradual descent and a gradual climb lead to the summit of Alto de Chirivilla before another gradual descent leads to the foot of the Puerto del Oronet – a 6.4 kilometres climb at 4%. Nothing to worry about.

The last climb of the day is Puerto del Garbi, a 9.3 kilometres ascent with steepest ramps of 21%. Yet, the average gradient is 5.2%, so that’s another case of ‘nothing to worry about’. Except for the fast men, probably.

At the top of Puerto del Garbi there are 36.4 kilometres left to race, mostly downhill. The final 3 kilometres are on the flat.

Note! The sprint is located 7.4 km from the finish! What?! :surprised:

    Vuelta-6-1.jpg

A flat stage with 5 categorised climbs....
The first two cat 3 climbs are 11km at 3.4% and 5.3km at 5.4% with a descent of just over 6km between them. Next up is another cat 3 climb, this one is 7.9km at 4.2%. The penultimate climb of the day is 6.4km at 4%, with the final climb, the cat 2 Puerto del Garbi is 9.3km at 5.1%, with a final 5km of 6.3% including ramps of 15 and 17% which will probably put the sprinters under pressure

This looks like one for the breakaways and strong men as opposed to the sprinters.

One of Julian Alaphillippe, or Bob Jungels for me.

    Oddschecker is giving
    Matteo Trentin 6/1
    Giovanni Visconti 7/1
    Jose Rojas Gil 10/1
    Bob Jungels 14/1
    Alexei Lutsenko 14/1
    Rui Costa 14/1
    Julian Alaphillippe 16/1

The final climb is hard enough to get rid of the true sprinters, and keep them from getting back on. Depending on who, if anyone, fancies the win we could see some explosions on that climb and groups all over the road on the descent and run in to the finish. This final climb is said to be tougher than yesterdays climb to the finish and we saw the damage done there.

Quickstep are here for the stage wins, I fancy them to try and make it hard enough for someone like Trentin or Alaphillippe to be in the reduced group sprint.

If one of the GC Teams decides they fancy some bonus seconds they may consider reeling in the break ahead of the 3,2,1 sprint bonifications not too far from the end.

We were all afraid that you were going to go on a big rant about the intermediate sprint being 8km from the finish! :D :pac:

12kms from the finish is nonsense but 8kms out is sound.

When I was young we used to get at best 3 week old newspaper reports of Coppi's exploits in the big races from an Italian fisherman. He had no English to we used to try to translate the reports using an English-Irish dictionary but the results were sketchy.

In terms of the race, seems an unusually hard stage, a quite large break including Bob Jungels, LL Sanchez & a few Astana riders are working hard to keep ahead of the Sky led peloton who are 2 mins 30 secs behind with just over 60 kms to go.

LL Sanchez is going to doom this break you'd think, Sky can't give him any rope and then surely the rest of the teams with noone in the break will help bring it back for a chance of stage glory?

Just turned it on a few minutes back & knew they were talking of someone harming the poor break so that's why. Sky obviously a super-strong team compared to the rest but I dunno if Froome's team would be too grateful for the amount of work they're doing in the race's first week.

So Dan Martin is on $2 million...reading the Contador article on Cyclingnews which says that was what his agent was looking for from Trek...should have got it from UAE as they have $30 million to spend

SKY drilling it again....they creating very hard racing very early on...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,084 ✭✭✭✭neris

poor carlton is getting very upset that team sky might have to do a bit of work and that if they dont reel in the break someone else might go into red. his attitude seems to be sky should just turn up win and everyone else give them an easy time

Contador always makes things fun doesn't he? Nice to see Froome not have a 5 man train for a change.

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out with the Contador group.

Nico could lose a chunk of time as Teejay is the Froome group.

EDIT: Teejay now dropped from Contador & Froome?

EDIT #2: It was Teejay who crashed!

    Teejay's off :(

    Gutted for him.

Froome/Contador only 17 seconds ahead of the other GC favourites group.

21 riders in the Froome group now including Nico.
There's gotta be some GC guys missing.

Looks like Yates and Del La Cruz should be ok to get back on there.

EDIT: Wait clock has them 30 second down now and not 10.

Thanks. La Vuelta always seems to make a point of ignoring Nico. Listing the entire race card before him

KIrby hardly mentions him as well

and ITV4 have totally ignored him crossing the line yesterday

Maybe he going for the LA Zubeldia award

The official tracker timings are all over the place. Good to hear Nico is with Froome.

Seems amazing that the chasing group of Contador, Froome, etc would get to within a handful of seconds, & then let them get away again.

Nico cant ride as TJ is behind

Pity as I think he could have gotten bonus seconds

Well Froome, Contador, Chaves and the GC crowd don't really care, it's more down to whoever else is in that group who fancies a stage win.
