Gas Boiler Problem

    hi there,

I have a problem with my Potterton System gas boiler. When the boiler finishes firing and a few minutes later the circulating pump stops, I get the "Low Pressure or Pump Problem" warning light starting to flash.

Power cycling the boiler removes the warning and the boiler functions normally until the next time it finishes. Rinse and repeat.

There is no issue with the pump as when I call for heat, all rads heat up as normal. I can feel the pump acting normally and there are no non-standard noises coming from it. The system pressure gauge reads just over 1 bar when cold and rises to 1.5-2.0 when in use.

When I was having the boiler serviced, the chap couldn't explain and jumped straight to PCB problem (I wasn't happy with the quality of the service, but that's another issue).

I can live with the problem, but wouldn't mind getting it sorted if it was a simple/cheap fix.

Anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

    Thanks
    /Bazmo

p.s. boiler is 15 years old and up to now has functioned flawlessly

The problem is a sticking flow switch, which indicates it is full of sludge/debris and requires stripping and cleaning. It should be simply sorted on the service. Essentially whats happening is the flow switch Oil Service not registering to the PCB that the pump has stopped (when it should have)

Get a decent service engineer, ask him to clean out the flow switch, and while doing it check the incoming filter on the return valve to indicate how dirty your system is, may need a power flush if really bad.

Any work on a gas boiler legally must be undertaken by a Registered Gas Installer only, do not attempt any work yourself.

Appreciate the reply DGOBS. Care to recommend a decent service engineer to me (by PM if it's against forum rules to name names). I don't trust myself to pick a good engineer as I seem to have done a lousy job with my last choice. I'm in D6.

    Thanks again.
