I wrecked the fob!

I have a Hyundai Santa Fe and the fob was basically worn down and truth be told I havnt used it in months as I just manually open and lock the doors. I eventually got round to getting a new replacement case and proceeded to swap things around. The mistake I made was that I inserted the little "electronic board" upside down in the new fob without realising it.

I thought the button cell battery was dead as it wouldn't work so I went to the local car accessory shop and the guy there put in a new battery for me and pressed one of the buttons and there was a red flash. He didnt notice it as he was talking on the phone at the same time and I didn't pay any heed to it as I just thought it was brighter than the old one. When I got home and tried it it wasnt working either and then when opening it up again I realised the mistake I made. Tried another battery this morning just to be sure and nothing, zilch, dead as a door mouse.

Is it expensive to have these replaced? Im assuming there's no such thing as a repair job. Also could a fob from a similar model (thinking breakers yard here) be programmed to work on my vehicle?

Appreciate any help, comments or advise. Cheers :)

What year Santa Fe is it? The old 2x button fobs independent of the key used on the -> 2009 model are around €75 from a dealer.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah its the old 2 button fob for an 04 model. As you say its just for the doors so Im not that pushed about it although it is handy at times. Might be changing again early next year so Im not sure if i could justify paying around €75 for a new one.

    The cost of stupidity :o

Yeah, it's a bit of a first world problem, sticking the key in the door is no hassle in reality.

If you get a second hand one, they can be reprogrammed to work on another car. That fob was used on nearly every Hyundai model between 2000 to 2010 ish. Some current models like the i10 still use it today so used ones should be plentiful.

Thats good to know. Come to think of it I have a cousin who works in a large dealership just over the border from me (not Hyundai) but they take in all types of cars and jeeps as trade ins so maybe they might have something.
