Car rental, provisional licence

Not sure if this the right thread but anyway... heading away for a few days with my partner and family. There'll be six of us and we'll be renting a car. My dad has a full licence so he will be the one renting, thing is we'll need a 7 seater which is working out at about €150 for two days, whereas a 5 seater is only €35.

I've got a provisional licence so I know I won't be able to rent a car myself, but is there any chance my dad could rent two 5 seaters and I could then just drive one? It'd save €80 and I'm a competent driver. Would this at all be possible... I understand to get around this he may have to rent off two different companies who would then not have knowledge of the fact that I'd be driving one of the cars.

It's not about what they know, it's about whether you're insured. If there's an incident on the road it'll become apparent who's driving.

You need to find a rental company prepared to allow you as a driver

I'd doubt any rental company will permit one of their cars to be driven by someone on a learner permit. Whether you are competent or not is beside the point, the fact is you will not be covered by insurance to drive it. And taking a chance would be a very dumb thing to do for all involved especially just to save money. Also if you're renting abroad then the other country may have some very harsh laws around uninsured drivers.

Saving €80 and driving with no insurance potentially making you liable for the price of the car plus the loss of rental to the rental car company in the event of a crash is not a good idea.

Also if it's abroad your going a provisional driving licence has zero legal status outside Ireland and if your stopped at any checkpoint your journey will stop there.

Don't drive a rental car on learners permit, even if rental company agrees. Bcoz in case of an accident, learner permit has no value and would be conisdered as driving without a licence.

Don't want to scare you but in many countries it's a jail for such offences.

Is it in Ireland you are renting or abroad?

    Simply no.

He can rent two or three, or even ten, but you can't drive any of them.

Never mind that you can't rent with a learners permit it's difficult to rent with a full licence for the 1st 2 years.

You are willing to risk points and a large fine, so no driving when you do pass your test, in Ireland and if not in Ireland there will be even bigger repurcissions for €80.

Even more than that. If he damages other property (another car, even a building) he'd be liable for that too.
And that's not even the worst, I mean how much could 2 cars cost, €250k? The worst would be if he causes injury to a third party and they require long term treatment or even are long-term disabled. The award would cover all costs, all lost income, and distress. What if more than one person is affected. The driver could have liabilities almost without limit, certainly could conceivably be north of a million.

Plus, as others say, driver could face criminal prosecution.

Some of these bad outcomes are unlikely. However the impact is astronomical. I would posit that the net effect means that it's better to spend an extra €80 or whatever and do things right.

itd be much the same as renting a car and paying for it with cash over the counter

A learner permit is not valid outside of the republic. It means nothing outside of our jurisdiction. Even if you are renting in Ireland you cannot drive the rental car unless the rental company explicitly allows you to, which they wont, given you do not hold a full license.

Once your remember one simple thing "provisional license is not a driving license", everything else becomes crystal clear.

You don't have a "Provisional Licence" they no longer exist, and haven't done so for a long time. What you have is called a "Learner's Permit", the clue is in the name.

It's very sad that there are people that even think such a ludicrous suggestion would be legal.

I rented a car like that few times. Not in Ireland though.
Small local rental company in Poland.
They were taking deposit in cash and payment for rental in cash.
They asked for a copy of my licence.

If you don't have a full license you don't have any proof of that.
