Concrete street surface

    Hi All,

SDCC are currently resurfacing out street and the surrounds. Its rather old concrete that needs the TLC but what surprised me is after they broke it up they began repouring the same concrete again and then texturing it like before.

Tarmac is so much more pleasant on the bike, google tells me that concrete is cheaper so is that the long and that short of it that they're cheaping out or would changing involve further excavation etc?

    Cheers,
    ED-E.

What do you mean by repouring the same concrete?

Do you mean pouring new concrete or using the existing concrete as part of a new concreted surface?

If the existing surface is being reused as part of the new then it's a "road recycling" effort and means no disposal costs for the old road and lower material costs for the new. It's also somewhat environmentally responsible although you'll find many such things are not investigated from a whole life perspective so it can be hard to get concrete figures (pun intended! ;-) )

If they are putting down a new concrete surface I'd say they have more than cost in mind. I haven't seen a new concrete road in years although I'm not based in Dublin which was the primary location of them in Ireland anyway. What type of finish is going on the concrete? Is it like the old style ripple/ridge effect?

I meant the same concrete surface, not the same actual material. They could be recycling or not, haven't been watching that closely.

    That was what surprised me.

Its the usual ridging to add traction, probably done with a ply board as you see with footpaths.

I can't see how that would be more cost effective. They may have some other reason for using concrete. But maybe I'm wrong.

I don't work directly on the area but I think it's safe to say that in Ireland the "default" surface for a public road is macadam (of one type or another) and anything that strays from that is done so for a quite specific reason.

Sorry that I've no more precise knowledge!
