Adding an alarm to your car with an alarm already fitted

I've recently brought a car and it only has an immobilizer. Ive been searching for an alarm only you can fit to a car. Is there currently anything on the market you can fit which you can rig to arm/disarm off your central locking?

What make and model is the car ? Aftermarket alarms can be a minefield of problems on some cars. I'd personally be happy with an immobilizer.

Depends on the make and model. I presume it's a relatively recent car, in which case it'll have the Canbus electrical system. There are third party alarms that plug into this system fairly easily. Older cars without such a setup require a different approach.

As for alarms causing problems? Unless you go for a dirt cheap Chinese eBay special, then 9 times outa 10 the fault lies with the installation. Wires twisted together with insulation tape rather than properly soldered and shrink-wrapped kinda thing. Of the alarm brands to go for the DEI ranges are pretty good. That would be Clifford, Viper. Though if I was in the market for an alarm today I'd probably seek out the Cobra Thatcham 1 model(s). Third party alarms haven't had much in the way in innovation over the last decade, but the Cobra have(smaller modules, no clicking relays that help scum locate the alarm brain, waterproof).

Thanks for your replies. Well the car i have is a peugeot 206 1.4hdi 05. The car momes fitted with an imobiliser but i would like more security incase it gets broken into. I would call myself good with electrics and schematics but i wouldnt feel confedent in installing a full imobiliser/alarm kit. What im really looking for is some alarm system you which can activate from the central locking. Is there such a thing or am i looking for something that doen't exist. Like you said that a Canbus system may be able to just plug. Is there a way to find out if my car can accept a canbus? Thanks

As far as I'm aware that's easily enough done.

Like you said that a Canbus system may be able to just plug. Is there a way to find out if my car can accept a canbus?

I would suspect an 05 car would be canbus?

I think it is but il phone the dealer to find out. Il see if i can find an alarm system that will fit. Appreciate your reply. Thanks
