    Hi all

Quick question, going to look at a car later, it has no tax and hasn't been signed off the road, if I was to purchase would I be liable for back tax?

    Thanks
    Jason

If you buy it today, you are liable for tax from the first of this month. Wait until the 1st of next month to sign over.

+1 the buyer is only liable from the 1st of the month when the change of ownership takes place so if you're looking at buying a car with no tax, wait until late in the month to do the deal, post the registration cert. to Shannon on the last day of the month and put the first of the next month as the date on the change of ownership.

Or if purchased towards the end of the month, you can declare it off the road retrospectively within 21 days of purchase date.
So f.e. you can buy it today, sign all paperwork and send to Shannon, and on or after 1st of September declare it wasn't used on public place between 22nd Aug and 1st September and tax it from 1st September.
