VRT late penalties

    I recently bought a car in Newry off a private seller. The car is an English reg car.

    I got a written invoice with the VIN etc and date of purchase earlier this month and made sure they filled in the permanent export section of the V5 which they posted last week. I insured the car and drove it down.

    I went to get the car VRT'd last week and was told that as the car hadn't been taxed since July 2016 (for whatever reason, I have no idea) that the car was liable to late penalties of over 1 year which adds a hefty penalty on top of the VRT. Not only is this completely illogical as the taxation end date in England and its date of entry in to the Republic of Ireland have nothing inherently to do with each other. They're asking for a ferry ticket but the old owner didn't retain it.

    I've applied for a certificate of permanent export off the DVLA but they're saying that's 4 weeks of waiting.

    I've asked the VRT/NCT centre if they'd accept the date of the cert of permanent export to adjust the penalties down but they're saying I have to pay the VRT + fines and then appeal it. Is this the only way or can I have this fixed beforehand as I would prefer not paying an invalid fine in the first place rather than paying and begging for it back off revenue?

    First of all you shouldn't have gone anywhere near the VRT office till you had the export cert and secondly if you'd read the buying from UK thread you'd have seen that you shouldn't have bought the car without the V5, if the seller wasn't willing to give you the V5 then you should have walked away.

    As for the penalty, I can't see how you can be penalised as you have only just bought the car in Northern Ireland. You need to go back to the seller and get a receipt for the car showing the price and the date you bought it along with the sellers name address and contact number.

    I have the full V5c minus the slip that's posted away to notify of export.

    I have spoken to them again and again and they're adamant I need to show them a ferry ticket and are backdating its date of entry to Ireland to the date the tax expired in England (which is nonsensical).

    I've even reviewed the VRT manual and it says clearly if evidence of the date of entry isn't available, they go by the date of the invoice. I've brought this up with the NCT centre agents and they say the price is from Revenue and to just pay and appeal. Which is insane considering their calculation is obviously not following guidance from Revenue. I'm trying to ring Revenue today to overrule them.

    You don't need a ferry to import an English reg. car from N.I.

    p.s. You should have had uk road tax on it.

    Did you hit it privately or from a dealer. Had the car been SORN'd in the UK, I.e. Evidence that it was off road? Are you sure they are not charging a penalty as a previous owner notified them of import and instead of proceeding with registration took it up north?

    you need to show evidence that you just bought the car, which you have.They have not understood that you bought the car in NI even though it's English.

    Strictly the slip off the V5C didn't need to be sent off as that is for the registered owner to export the car himself. You don't need a cert of export as you have the main part of the V5C and a receipt.

    They've made an error here and it looks like they're going to make you go through the appeal procedure because of their error
