HAP / Rent Allowance

I've recently been approved for council housing and therefore am now entitled to apply for HAP. I've been doing a lot of property research through DAFT.ie but I'm finding it difficult to find accommodation within my rental limit.

My current limit with my partner is €900 per month, but I am entitled to €792 per month without him and he the same without me for a total of €1,584 per month.

Is it possible for us both to apply separately for HAP and then find a landlord willing to rent a property to us both, thus allowing us to afford to rent or as it would be shared accommodation would the rent limit for HAP be reduced?

Based on current research we would be looking at needing about €1,100 per month but preferably €1,300. There is also a possibility that HAP can be increased by 20% in certain circumstances thus giving us €1,080 per month max! How does one go about this and is there any cases as to where it can be increased even further if reasonable accommodation cannot be found.

If you are living with your partner you cannot both claim HAP separately. I think the 20% increase in the limits only applies in Dublin and surrounding counties on a case by case basis.

Even if it were possible, you're not going to find a landlord willing to go to the hassle of 'splitting the bill'. Why would they? It's not as if there's a shortage of renters.

If you have a look at the amounts again you'll see there's one for 'single shared', that's the amount for a person sharing a place with someone else. It's usually less x 2 then it is for a couple and you'd need 2 bedrooms.
