I have a shallow well and the other day I left a tap running and I think there was some sand sucked up, now the pump will not suck any water up. how would I release the sand from the pipe?

The impellers in the pump are probably clogged, not the water pipe
You'll need to take the pump apart and clean them

If it's one then there must be a non return valve in the well on the end of the pipe.

My bet it some grit or a pebble has been sucked in and is preventing it closing properly.

It may require lifting and cleaning out.

How shallow is the well? I changed the pump last week, 90' deep, when the water is disturbed you'll have plenty sh1t and grit for a few days after, surely that wouldn't block a pump.
