Pay electrician that wasn't able to finish job

    Hello,

We had an engineer coming twice to try to install a thermostat on our house, both times he has left after spending there all morning trying to install it without success. The second time, he advised us to contact an electrician to figure out if there's something wrong on our installation, then call him back to finish the job.

Are we in any way committed to call him back to finish the job once we fix the problem in our installation, and pay him, or we can just call another person that can properly do it?

The only job he's done so far is removing the old thermostat from the wall.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

My question is more from a legal point of view. He has come twice to our house to try to fit it without success, replacing things that needn't to be replaced and putting them back etc. He hasn't charged us as he hasn't finished the job (barely started).

Can we just hire another person to do the job, without having to pay anything to this person?

The first thing is that you are asking for legal advice, which is not allowed.

Secondly, it's not possible to answer your question, in the absence of expert evidence.

It would be interesting to see what the electrician would have to say on the matter.

What type of engineer carried out the work?

Well if he was there twice and couldnt complete the job because of someone elses work then he should be paid however I would consider that if he couldnt do it because he took on a job that he hadnt the skills or knowledge for then he probably shouldnt get paid. The circumstances are very important here I think.
