New HEO, addtional HEO role transferred to my team straight away

    Hi folks

I recently started as a HEO in civil service, was delighted to get the job from the panel. Anyways first week, there is restructuring of the whole section I'm in, one of the other HEOs was transferred to another section and I was told that I would be taking over his work.

Doesn't seem right to me, do I have any leg to stand on from a HR point of view? I don't want to go to HR directly since I'm in the door.

Whats the problem taking over his work, did you apply for specific work which doesn't relate to what this other HEO was doing?

Sorry but your issues isn't clear, are you doing work other than you expected, or is the issue that you were expecting to work with the other HEO? Perhaps you only got the HEO role as the other HEO was moving on and you were to be their replacement, without this being told to you.

    Edit:

Also what do you mean that another HEO was transferred to your team straight away, there are no details regarding that in your post, was the HEO that in your new team transferred to the team you transferred out of?

is saying that additional "HEO Role" was assigned to his Unit

    i.e. now doing extra work

Op - restructuring happens - if you have concerns over workload or being able to meet deadlines make this known but really your only option is to get on with as best you can.

I'm brand new to civil service, I came in through public competition.

I was given a work load of one HEO, look after these areas, that was fine. Then 1 week into the job, I was told I've to take on additional areas, all the work of the HEO that was leaving the team.

So in the space of a week, I have been given the workloads of 2 HEOs

Were there two HEOs there before you? Perhaps the other HEO was doing all the work previously, now you are simply taking over from that one HEO doing all the work.

Including myself there are 3 HEOs with distinct areas to look after. Now with this HEO being transferred, I've been given work of 2 HEOs.

Sorry now, fair enough if this sounds like I'm complaining but this is why I'm posting here. I'm unsure if this is the way the new entrants in civil service are treated, earn your stripes and get on with it or does this seem excessive to get this amount of work?

It's not clear how much extra work you're actually getting. Maybe there wasn't enough work for two HEOs any longer and so they've consolidated it into one? That sort of thing happens all the time.

You're just in the door and on probation - if you go to HR straight away you'll risk getting a name as a workshy troublemaker. In any event, you should always raise any workload concerns with your line manager in the first instance. Going to HR should be a last resort.

I recommend that you do your best with the tasks you've been given, see how you get on and if you find it's unmanageable in a few weeks then ask for a chat with your manager.
